Teen Wolf – What is Gerard’s end game?

It looks like 'Teen Wolf's' Kanima has an unlikely new master. This is going to change the way lines are drawn in the monsters versus humans battle for sure.

- Season 2, Episode 10 - "Fury"

For all of the action, suspense and heartbreak in Teen Wolf‘s “Fury,” I’m left with one pervasive thought about the episode: Gerard is one manipulative and hypocritical bastard. I thought I had seen the worst of the worst when he manipulated Allison into seeking vengeance for her mother’s death. In fact, I question whether Allison’s mother even wrote that note. Then, Gerard went on to manipulate Allison and Chris into believing that Allison knew the difference between revenge and retribution. Here’s a 17-year-old girl who has just lost her mother — there’s not a chance she can differentiate her feelings right now, and she’s in no position to be calling the shots for this mission. Yet Gerard has her just where he wants her … he should be ashamed of himself. Don’t even get me started on Gerard killing another human with his bare hands, not to save the humans from an evil monster, but to control one himself.

Alan was on the money when he told Derek that Gerard’s plan was going exactly as he wanted it to. At the time, I thought it had something to do with Peter, but now I’m thinking Peter may be the one person that can stop Gerard in all his evil glory. Now that Gerard has control over the Kanima, imagine what evil he can do. Do you think he’ll even try to disguise it in the form of “the end justifies the means” or do you think the evil will just take him over?

I love the symbolism here, and the statements Teen Wolf is making about good and evil. Traditionally, it’s the monsters who are evil and the humans who are good, and they need to fight the good fight, save the world, what have you. But Teen Wolf is turning this accepted paradigm on its head by making Gerard the Big Bad. Now, this has been done before: Buffy had its turn when Willow was the Big Bad and Spike turned good, and Angel was this symbolism embodied as the vampire with a soul. Twice now, Supernatural has done the same, first in “The Benders” and again this season with “Repo Man,” focusing on the humans as the evil ones. We know how it all turned out for Buffy, and they generally stuck to the analogy of monsters bad/people good. The recurring theme of Supernatural is also such that the humans will be the ones to save the world.

It will be interesting to see where Teen Wolf takes this assumption. Will it be temporary, or will the lines between the monsters and the humans stay blurred? I welcome that, because it’s real. There are monsters everywhere on this earth and you don’t have to look very hard to find the monstrocities committed by humans. It stands to reason that a show about monsters can have all types. I get that there were good monsters on Buffy and Angel, and there are certain vampires that we can count on in The Vampire Diaries (though I see this as less of a statement and more of the fact that we need some 3-dimensionality to the characters; we’re supposed to like the vampires). I don’t deny that all of these shows are doing it to a degree. But instead of getting all wrapped up in the supernatural elements, Teen Wolf has the opportunity to showcase evil in its many forms, as a series-wide statement and I hope they grab it and run with it. What they’ve set up with Gerard is spectacular, and the curve of the arc that got us here was well-played.

This and that:

  • Do we know how to kill a Kanima yet? Gerard likely does because he’s got that book memorized, but Allison was not having much like hurting Jackson.
  • It was heartbreaking watching Scott’s mother reject him as a wolf. I was yelling at the television set, “Scott, just talk to her. Tell her it’s OK, that you’re OK.” Oh, my.
  • There’s going to be some huge fallout now that Derek knows Scott was a double-agent for Gerard. Allison’s going to feel crappy when she finds out as well. And poor Scott, just another victim to Gerard’s manipulations. No one seems to know where to put their trust.
  • When Stiles falls paralyzed onto the already-paralyzed Derek, Matt just says what we were all thinking: “You two make a pretty good pair.”
  • So Alan’s been at this for a long time, protecting Derek and his family. That loyalty is not coming from a place of evil, and Alan knows the evil inside Gerard. More evidence for my theory. …

I agree with you. Teen Wolf does a good job showing that what we are isnt what makes someone good or bad, it what choices we do that matters. Gerard and his daughters is the biggest monsters I’ve seen in Teen Wolf. Matt comes close but he clearly has PTSD from drowning and not getting help. Can you imagine how he must have felt all those years? I wonder if it was Matts drowning that turned Isaacs father from a good father to another monster?

And I feel for Melissa, she had alot happening to her in seconds. First worrying for her son, then seeing two monsters fighting infront of her and then having her son joining them… Hope she will gett over it, Scott need his mother very much and she needs him. Hope she will not take a leaf from Joice Summers book and kick Scott out.

Did Matt die or has he enough of Kanima in him to come back? As we’ve seen it is very hard to kill a Kanima.

That’s an interesting point you bring up about Matt; at first, I thought the Kanima that Gerard controlled was Matt, but then they showed Matt’s body and the Jackson Kanima in the same shot. I was assuming Matt would be dead, but him coming back to life as another Kanima, with no master, would be a complex twist, to be sure.

I love this show more than I thought I could. When I started watching the first season I thought it was good but this season it has stepped its game exponentially! I completely agree with your take on the good and evil. It really is different from some of the rest of the shows in that while pretty much most of the main characters are either some sort of supernatural monster or hunting them, or at least have some knowledge of them in one way or another.. that this show chooses not to center everything around the supernatural by bringing in this good and evil fight without representing one side as absolute evil or good. It draws on people’s emotions I think, really well.

I am still trying to figure out what the hell Gerard is up to.. and exactly WHAT he is? Those pills he’s constantly popping are driving me nuts! And also, I vaguely remember the episode that he stabbed Scott outside the hospital him saying something to the effect that if Scott didn’t do what he said, he would kill Scott’s mother.. am I imagining this? If this did happen this explains why Scott had to be a double agent for him. And as for his mother I really do hope she accepts him.. but as it would probably make for some really emotional and heart-wrenching material I wouldn’t be surprised if that is something that will be drawn out and carried into the next season (which I hope there is?). I hope they don’t leave too many things to carry over to next season as there still seem to be SO many unanswered questions with only 2 more episodes left! Peter has only just returned, Lydia is still a mystery to me. Also, I may be way off but I’m wondering if Derek did not actually bite Allison’s mom? I feel like there must be some reason the show did not actually SHOW US the part where Derek bit her? Maybe Gerard had something to do with that as well? I would not be surprised if the Kanima bit her or something along those lines and she ends up showing up on the canvas at some point.. but again it could just be a crazy theory.

I can’t get enough of this show!

You are absolutely right about Gerard threatening Scott; I should have mentioned that as another evil deed of his, but there were so many from just this episode to write about!

Another thing that was small, but I didn’t mention — and can’t get out of my head — is the compassion Scott showed Allison when she came at him, all warrior-like. You could see the expression on his face change from confusion, to compassion, to wondering what had happened, b/c he knew that something big must have gone down for Allison to go all vengeance queen. I don’t think he even knows about her mother yet. I just loved how Tyler Posey played that scene.

Yea, I don’t think Scott knows at all about Allison’s mother either. And it has been irking me about her mother getting bitten since with all the flashing of the strobe lights they never showed him physically biting her. I guess Derek might not want to share with Scott that he had bitten the mother of the girl Scott loves BUT at the same time I wonder a little that had Derek been the one that bit her he might have actually told Scott. Maybe it was just an oversight by the show or something along those lines. I also found it interesting that RIGHT before her mother died as she said she started to feel “it” (referring to her turning) happening that her eyes began to turn white rather than the yellow color of the other werewolves? I may just be reading into too much though. Of all the characters on this show, Allison’s mother was the one I liked least so I am not upset that she’s gone or if she stays gone, but it would certainly make for some REALLY interesting situations if she is not in fact truly dead. It’s unbelievable how mind boggling this show truly is. I even got my 61 year old mother to start watching it and she LOVES it.
