Burn Notice ends with a shocking death

In a shocking turn of events, "Burn Notice" kills off a character we all know (but probably didn't love) this week. Will Michael be able to forgive himself for letting someone close to him die?

- Season 6, Episode 6 - "Shock Wave"

Burn Notice dropped a big shock on its viewers this week: the death of Nate Westen. I was just thinking last week that he was getting to be quite the member of Michael’s crew, too. Again this week, though, Michael seemed to criticize everything Nate did, making me wonder why Michael brought him along. Okay, I guess with Fi out of commission they are understaffed.  But, seriously, I know the agency hates Sam, but how did Agent Pearce let NATE of all people go along to get Anson instead? Even Maddie would have been a better choice.

“Do not approach him?” Really, Michael? That is exactly the way to get Nate to want to prove something to you after you kicked him off the team. RIP, Nate. I didn’t mind him, though he was annoying at times, but I can see how his death will really shake things up for Michael. There’s his mother to deal with (my impulse would be to slap him, too), and also his own guilt in dragging Nate into his whole burn notice/save Fiona mess. Michael internalizes everything, so I am guessing this will mess him up in the head for a long while. At the very moment of his triumph, when Anson is killed, he loses his brother.

In less serious news, we had the return of Barry this week, so at least the left-behind Sam had something to do. Lately, Sam seems to be shunted off with peripheral characters like Barry and Rebecca, but since Bruce Campbell has fun chemistry with most actors, I don’t mind so much. This is also the third week in a row he’s gotten to use his Chuck Finley alias! And he used bacon to make a smoke bomb!  But seriously, the thread of this plot was just a way to show how Michael’s crew is beleaguered from all sides lately.

Were you surprised by Nate’s death? And how do you think Michael will cope with it going forward? What is there even to do now that Anson appears to be dead and Fiona is out of jail? Find out who murdered Anson and Nate, I guess. It’s a whole new dynamic for this show, folks.

Notes and Quotes

  • British Spy’s chiron after being pleased to meet Fi said “not at all pleased.”
  • They spent so much time on the Sam/Barry plot that it almost seemed the main thread, perhaps to make Nate’s death even more surprising than it was. I mean, I am not surprised Nate got himself killed, but I wasn’t necessarily expecting it in a mid-season episode, you know?
  • Fi is awfully tan for being in prison. How much yard time DO they get, anyway? Aside from that, her plot was mostly in a holding pattern this week until the end.
  • Agent Pearce: “Seven  phone calls, four texts and two cryptic e-mails, all to set up a cloak-and-dagger meeting in the woods. I think you enjoy being a spy a little too much, Michael.”
  • Michael: “Sam is every bit as good as I am. And he accepts domestic beer as payment.”
Agent Pearce: “I’ll put a note in his file.”
  • Sam, on hearing he is off the team: “I’ve been helping you slog through this burn notice garbage for how many years now? And I don’t get to be there when you finally put the wraps on the last bastard standing.”
  • Sam: “Oh, come on, you said those tax shelters were totally legal!”
Barry: “Sam, what part of that sounds ‘totally legal’? Tax shelter?!”
  • Barry: “IF we live?”
Sam: “Barry, there’s four guys outside with guns. That’s a lot.”
  • Fiona, on seeing her hidey hole: “Just me and a year’s supply of menthols, huh?”
  • Barry: “I can’t die. I’ve never climbed Kilamajaro. I’ve never seen The Wire. I’ve never even had a four-way. I’ve never –”
Sam: “I’ve never strangled a friend in cold blood before, but it’s early.”
  • Anson, to Nate: “Enjoy the moment, Fredo.”

This episode started out slow I’ll admit, it was but this episode was just too deep, it was like what everything had come down to. It was what Michael wanted, it was what he worked for.. Ever since that first “we got a burn notice on you” since thien.. It gave the story a motive… Then his brother getting killed… That was too too deep… It made my girl cry when the mom found out.. I guess it brought about that human nature, that human touch and made the show a lil more realistic.
I love this show, it’s my getaway from ordinary life,

I’ll be dammed if this show ever gets cancelled

Nate’s death really did surprise me.
Of course, when I look back at how
Michael was treating him, I should
have seen something coming. However,
once I realized he had been shot, I
didn’t cry…at first. I’ve seen the
main/side characters walk away with
a gunshot wound, so long as it wasn’t
lodged in a main artery or organ. But
when Nate whispered, “I’m scared.” and
he cried…I lost it. I bawled like a
baby. I honestly loved Nate throughout
the series. I’d grown attatched to him.
Now it feels like even I lost another
brother. The only thing that keeps me locked
in reality, is that the actor who plays
Nate is alive. But I’ll miss Nate on the show.
And I’m curious as to how this will affect
Michael and his mother.

This show is amazing. I’ve been watching it for
over four years. All of the seasons. I love it
and will continue to watch it. Even if my brother
from another mother isn’t on it anymore. </3

This past episode was definitely a clincher with the death of Nate Westen. I feel as though I have lost a family member. This tragedy did make the show more realistic. I am wondering though about the future of the show. Michael has finally accomplished his ultimate goal, so where else is there to go? I think Rebecca killed Anson because she didn’t want any compromise or negotiations and Michael couldn’t very well kill Anson with the CIA there to watch.

The decision to kill off Nate will be costly to burn notice. In the past years BN has been full of action, drama and funny little quips and personalities., Now , with the death of Nate (who has really grown on us all) the humor will be misplaced if at all. Why does every show in Hollywood want to be DARK? BN had depth but do they ALL have to go with the creep factor? It broke my heart that Nate died, The consequences for BN will be evident soon., The strained relationship between Michael and Mad, and hey lets face it Fiona too. This was all to get HER out prison. What happens when Nate’s shooter (collateral damage i know) is found? Who they gonna kill off then? They should have killed off Jessee…Nate added more to the show than Jessee….Bad decision BN exec!

well to be honest it fit his character and needed to happen. it isn’t in any of the other peoples nature to be killed off as they are the ‘trained ops.’ i can understand that for some people its hard seeing a likable character die but if they kept going like this with none of the good guys getting killed it would have been unrealistic. And on another note without a death close to Michael there would have been no need to continue the show. Anson was the last enemy for Michael, what other main plot would they do? so although Nate’s death was sad, it was a necessity to continue this show. Now we have a new villain to hunt down, the killer(s) of Nate westen.

I’m just curious abt this character’s death….anyone care to answer, was Nat always destined to die?
Or, did he want more money in his contract, so they(producers) killed him, the character, off?
Or, have the ratings taken a dive, and this is a way to resurect the show?

Thanks

According to Matt Nix, executive producer, it was a creative decision to shake up the show. Now that Michael’s quest to bring down those who burned him with Anson death is done, they needed a new story. This will propel Michael on a new path — to find who killed his brother. It also change Michael’s relationship with his mother.

I see no compelling reason to kill off Nate Weston, despite those offered here. The producer who offered a “creative reason.” Really? Like the show hasn’t found lots of creative plotlines in the past 4 years without resulting to desperate measures like these.

As for the OP’s comment “a character we all know, but probably didn’t love” — I beg to differ! I think many loved the character of Nate and could relate to his flawed and well-meaning attempts to help his brother. We also got to see the struggles of two brothers in their attempts to get along with each other. That is something every family can relate to.

Personally, I think it was a mistake to have Nate killed. I do not think any of the main cast of characters in a series needs to be killed. If a writing crew thinks so, in my opinion it speaks of a weak writing staff. If that is the only angle you can think of to shake things up, then in my opinion, you aren’t stretching your writing muscle very much.

I felt very disheartened that Nate is gone from the show. I feel like the show will never be the same. The show has lost its light. As someone said, shows do not always have to be dark.
