Suits – Hardman’s back – The cast reveals what’s coming up next

In the Suits season two premiere, Daniel Hardman’s (David Costabile) wife died causing both Jessica (Gina Torres) and Harvey (Gabriel Macht) to panic that he would return to the firm now that their leverage over him was gone. Harvey confidently threatened Hardman to keep him away, unfortunately the named partner wasn’t going to be bullied anymore. He revealed his secrets to his daughter and to all the Pearson Hardman employees. No secrets meant no more blackmail.

Last month, I visited the Suits set with a group of writers. We got the scoop from the cast about this season of Suits. Check out the first interview article from last week, “USA’s Suits: Meet the ladies.”

What is going to happen next?

Patrick Adams (Mike): We’re all kind of banding together to make this thing work this season because Hardman comes in and we have this presence that could be potentially threatening to everybody.  But obviously Louis kind of walks the thin line between both of those worlds, right?  Louis … there’s a part of him where … he could maybe head off towards Hardman, I think. He’s been used and abused by Jessica and Harvey for so long and I’m … Harvey’s protégé so as a representative of that [Louis] is always going to treat me with that sort of disrespect.  And I think it makes for a lot of really funny, funny scenes.  And actually a couple of touching ones.

Sarah Rafferty (Donna): ….it’s the power, the balance of power, you know, gets thrown off and I think with Hardman there, I think for Harvey and Jessica that it’s complicated and everything becomes so much more political and so much more delicate and you have to really try to understand where people’s allegiances are….  And I think Louis’ character is caught in a way that’s really dynamic. I think introducing Hardman just makes all the relationships more dynamic in a way.  I think it’s really exciting.  It’s really exciting to have David [Costabile] here, he’s amazing.

How will Jessica react to Hardman’s return?

Gina Torres: We do we get to see a different part of Jessica; we did get to see her shaken up a little bit.  And there’s a white-hot spotlight on her at the moment and there’s a lot going on. … Everything that we come to learn about Hardman’s disappearance and his return is very layered. It’s all very layered and again it’s another aspect to these characters that we haven’t yet seen. I mean I like to think of Jessica in the first season is being you know large, in charge, in control and kind of happy-go-lucky, this is her domain she just struts down this hallway and she’s invulnerable. And now we see we start to see the little chinks in the armor and the scars. And any woman who gets to that office, any person who gets to that office, has some battle scars and has some bodies buried in places. It would be ridiculous not to think so and Hardman’s reappearance I think speaks to the battles along the way.

What is Hardman’s relationship with Rachel?

Meghan Markle (Rachel):   There’s a very specific context in which Daniel Hardman left the firm and it personally affects Rachel because of, um, something you will see.

Is Hardman a bad guy?

Patrick Adams: [Hardman’s] not coming in and being the terrible guy. In fact, he seems like the nice guy.  He’s dealing with some serious life issues.  And – and again, we just kind of skirt that issue where it’s never quite one thing or the other.  It’s not like he’s Darth Vader and we all just want to destroy him.  I mean he might actually be in the right.

Gabriel Macht: … you’re gonna see this hard man … this guy that you know he’s had these problems, and he screwed up royally, but he’s really coming back trying to make amends.  And so, as an audience member you’re supposed to trust him, and believe that he’s just trying to be okay. You learn why Harvey doesn’t really like him or trust him. … Totally untrustworthy guy, but you know we hope that he comes across trustworthy at times.  I don’t trust him as long … as far as I can throw him.
