The arc of these characters come to a new point. In some cases, a fulfillment of desires, in others, struggling to change — or just floundering in place. We start with an illustrative example of the cardinal rule of moving: Moving sucks. Adam is helping Marnie move out of Hannah’s apartment, in the latest of “The Evolution of Adam,” which is pounded home when he tells Hannah he wants to move in with her.
Marnie is invited to stay at Shoshanna and Jessa’s place as long as necessary; after all, Jess hasn’t been seen in over a day. But then they all get invited to “the most important party” in Jessa’s life. Nobody has any idea what it’s about. Once there, the mystery party gets introduced by an awkward guy (Bobby Moynihan) and hands them a big, crazy shocker: this is the wedding of Jessa and Thomas Jane (Chris O’Dowd), the guy who tried to have a three-way with her and Marnie two episodes ago.
You heard that right. Jessa is getting married. Her spontaneous nature and love of money have her getting married after only two weeks of dating Thomas. During her vows, Jessa explains how she was initially revolted, but suddenly with talk of travel and finance, she fell in love. I’m really not sure yet how to interpret this behavior — she claims to be happy and content, yet who really knows? She’s so slapdash in general it’s difficult to get a real idea of her motives.
Naturally, Adam is moved while Hannah is just confused. Before we get back to that subplot, let’s finish two other ones. Charlie “jokingly” propositions Marnie to get busy in the bathroom, and goes a bit further than is comfortable. Marnie is clearly getting into the awkward Bobby Moynihan guy, and actually kisses him, as Charlie sees from the background. So Marnie has her own character arc of self-realization, where she now knows that apparently she likes awkward, slightly overweight, corny guys. Who knew?
As for Shoshanna, we finally have something with her, as recurring character Ray propositions her and everyone’s favorite virgin finally loses “it.” There’s been barely a character arc for her, basically going from self-consciousness about virginity to losing it. Less interesting in some ways than the other characters, but we get a loss less too.
As for Hannah, because it’s all about her, formerly in the closet Elijah reveals he gave Hannah HPV after all and Hannah asks Elijah to move in. So Adam doesn’t have to move in — but, uh oh, Adam offered because he loves her. Evolution of Adam. Adam says some very nice things to her, but he’s hurt by her behavior. She admits she’s afraid and … Bam! He gets hit by a car (he’s not dead, but it looked like it hurt), and then off to hospital without Hannah. Hannah takes the subway until it stops, finds her purse is gone, and has to walk back to more familiar territory. She ends up on a beach chewing at some food. Eating.
She’s grown a bit over the course of the season, but she ended up literally miles apart from anyone else she knew. Hannah has to walk back under her own power. Perhaps she’ll find some real happiness in season two.
