TV SHOWS COLUMNS FEATURES CHATS QUESTIONS

Live from New York, it’s a Saturday Night Live CliqueClack Flashback!

With 37 seasons to draw inspiration from, join me as I take a look back at some of the most memorable recurring characters ever to grace the small screen on 'Saturday Night Live.' Did I include most of your favorites?

15. Canteen Boy – Adam Sandler was adorable as the Boy Scout who probably overstayed his welcome. Do you remember the uncomfortable skit with Alec Baldwin as the creepy Scoutmaster?

14. The Richmeister – Some people find Rob Schneider annoying. I am not one of those people. I loved his character that was always mocking people while they were “makin’ copies at the copy machine.” The best one featured him mocking David Koresh.

13. The Samurai – It didn’t really matter what the setting was, seeing John Belushi as a sword-yielding samurai at a bakery or a delicatessen was extremely comical.

12. Land Shark – “Candygram.” There’s just something about Chevy Chase dressed as a giant shark trying to fool people into opening their doors so he can eat them that makes me giggle. It was the perfect Jaws parody.

11. Simon – “Hello, my name is Simon and I love to do drawerings.” I think I might be the only person who loved these sketches featuring Mike Myers as a little boy who drew pictures because he was lonely. But every time I receive a new drawing in the app Draw Something on my phone, I can’t help but sing his little theme song to myself.

10. The Church Lady – “Well, isn’t that special.” Dana Carvey as the holier-than-thou Church Lady was priceless. Do you remember the one with Fred Savage as a mini-Church Lady?

9. Daily Affirmations with Stuart Smalley – “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and dog-gone it, people like me!” Al Franken as Stuart Smalley doling out therapy while not a licensed therapist was always good for a laugh. He was at his best during his Halloween special in which he told a scary story involving an alcoholic pranking his babysitter.

8. Coffee Talk with Linda Richman – “The Partridge Family were neither partridges nor a family. Discuss.” Mike Myers’ impersonation of his then-mother-in-law is one for the ages. Watching him dish about Barbara Streisand and assorted topics for us to discuss was like butta’.

7. Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood – Eddie Murphy produced several memorable characters for SNL but Mr. Robinson was always my favorite, probably because I adored Mr. Rogers as a child. I’ll never forget when he stuck a head of cabbage on a doll’s body and said he was going to rip off unsuspecting kids by telling them it was a Cabbage Patch Doll, which was the hottest toy back then.

6. Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey – Inspirational words of wisdom for the uninspired. “Dad always thought laughter was the best medicine, which I guess is why several of us died of tuberculosis.” Every anecdote was hilarious, even when they tried to resurge the sketch with the less-popular Fuzzy Memories.

5. The Coneheads – “We come from France!” I think it’s my inner sci-fi nerd (lover of The Twilight Zone and Ray Bradbury novels) that enjoys the Coneheads so much. From their shiny costumes to their amusing rituals, they really should have had their own show.

4. Matt Foley – Chris Farley’s motivational speaker who was “livin’ in a van down by the river.” He could do pratfalls like nobody’s business.

3. Wayne & Garth – “We’re not worthy!” Wayne’s World was the first SNL-based movie I remember going to see in theaters when I was a kid. From the musical cameos (Aerosmith & Madonna instantly come to mind) to the awesome ‘80s rocker hair, Mike Myers and Dana Carvey created magic from Wayne’s basement in Aurora, Illinois. I only wish they would’ve made it a movie trilogy for the ages.

2. Mr. Bill – Oh, no! How could he not make number one? It was a really tough decision on my part, as I completely adore the Claymation specials featuring Mr. Bill, his dog Spot, girlfriend Sally, villain Sluggo and the omniscient Mr. Hands. Who could ever forget them?

1. The Blues Brothers – While they were more of a recurring musical act on early SNL, I’d be remiss if I didn’t make them my favorite, as that movie is one of my favorite movies of all time. Brilliance of John Belushi + Dan Aykroyd + director John Landis + explosive car chases = the formula for success in my book. And oh yeah, the music was phenomenal too.
