Revenge – How far would you go to protect your family?

'Revenge' continues to surprise week after week with its twists. This week was no exception. Many secrets were revealed that will change the Hamptons forever.

- Season 1, Episode 19 - "Absolution"

Secrets were revealed, but it is what was done with those secrets that delved into each person’s real character.

The biggest disappointment — Daniel.

Jack continued to show that he is honorable. He revealed the truth about his role on the beach and about the bloody sweatshirt to Daniel. And, Daniel seemed to be headed towards being truthful himself … until Conrad got to him.

What would make Daniel keep Conrad’s secret? It can’t be to protect the family name; he has been trying to escape it since college. Was it his anger at Victoria? If it was, that was very misguided. Sure, she did something horrible, but Conrad’s sins were exponentially worse.

Is Daniel no longer an innocent in Emily’s game of revenge? He knows his family’s sins now and when he could have disavowed them, he didn’t. At the end, I was holding out hope that we would get a clue that Daniel is playing his father, but that didn’t come.

Since he doesn’t know about Emily’s plans, could he be setting up his own plan to bring down Conrad? Please let that be the case. I don’t think I could stand a bad Daniel. Unfortunately, it looks like that may be his future.

The theme of the episode was about how far someone would go to protect their family. The Graysons will do anything, even kill or scapegoat another. Just how far with Daniel go? And, does he consider Emily part of his family? It won’t be long until he becomes suspicious of her.

Emily forgave Nolan’s secret based on his need to protect his aunt, but will she extend that to Daniel as well? I don’t think so. Nolan’s secret didn’t harm anyone, since David was already dead. Plus, Nolan has proved that he will do whatever he can to protect Emily.

But, where does the line get drawn? If Emily murders someone, is she that different from the Graysons? If her goal is truly to make the Graysons pay for what they did to her father, why doesn’t she just secretly send the wiretaps to the Feds? They may not be admissible in court, but they would give the Feds the information needed to find proof of the Graysons’ crimes.

Unfortunately, Emily doesn’t want justice; she wants payback. In the end, it may destroy her.

As is normal for Revenge, it creates more questions than answers. The season is quickly coming to a close, how will it possibly end?

Odds and Ends

  • Someone finally cares about Charlotte! She may hate Declan right now, but he did the right thing. Plus, if she hadn’t been caught, her mother would not have reached out to her.
  • The “Occupy Daniel” twitter reference was hilarious. And, a sign of our crazy, celebrity obsessed nation.
  • Ashley oh Ashley. Interesting career moves. Will working for Conrad decrease her life expectancy?
  • Emily is still going to marry Daniel?!? What are the odds of the wedding actually happening? At this point, I hope not good!
  • Since the beginning, I’ve wondered if David was still alive somewhere being protected. Given that Nolan faked his aunt’s death, does that mean he could have done the same for David? And, if that’s true, would Emily ever forgive him?
