Person of Interest – Reese’s past returns

While former Agent Reese goes undercover as an armored car guard, his past comes back to haunt him.

- Season 1, Episode 20 - "Matsya Nyaya"

While “Matsya Nyaya”  surprised me by revealing the puppy-faced guard as the killer and his waif-like waitress girlfriend as the ringleader, the flashback to Reese’s past and the development in the group’s relationship served as the episode’s true core.

Reese and Carter
Having watched the pilot, “Get Carter,” “Super,” “Flesh and Blood,” “Cura Te Ipsum” as well as the beginning of “Legacy” and the ending of “Number Crunch,” I grew fascinated with Reese and Carter’s relationship. For awhile, I couldn’t understand Reese’s obsession with a police detective he barely met. Yet, after I wrote my Burn Notice-POI article, I caught a Burn Notice re-run where Michael called Sam and Fiona his personal moral compasses. Suddenly, I realized Reese needed Carter as HIS moral compass. With Finch and Fusco sharing his “do whatever it takes” mentality, he clearly needed someone absolutely different. But, this week’s episode  absolutely destroyed my theory (and my Reese-Carter obsession).

Agent Reese is the guy that takes you on multiple dates, wines you, dines you, and whispers he’ll always protect you. But, the minute you trust him (and he KNOWS you trust him), he stops the whispers, the courting and the handholding, telling you to hold your own damn purse and to pay for your own damn meal. After watching Detective Carter vacillate about working with Reese and Finch, this week she clearly decided to trust the dynamic duo wholeheartedly. And, even before she gave her speech, Reese KNEW it. Rather than try to protect Carter and assuage her feelings, he turned her into another Fusco, mocking her while denying her any answers.

After watching Reese freak out over Carter in past episodes, watching him make no effort to help Carter subdue the scorned ex-girlfriend felt odd. Although I never felt any romantic connection between the two, I loved their unexplained relationship. However, this week removed the mystery. From Reese’s perspective, Carter isn’t a friend, she’s an asset. And, now, she is no longer an asset he courts, she’s an asset he owns.

Jess and Reese
Just as “Matsya Nyaya” explained the Carter-Reese connection for me, it also explained Jess and Reese.

I never understood why an ex-girlfriend’s death – a woman he never married or even proposed — made Reese a dedicated alcoholic. But, telling Jess to wait for him, then not saving her probably catalyzed her death (possibly at Snow’s hands). I’m slightly disappointed that Reese didn’t go to her. While I understand why he didn’t leave a message, if he had, maybe it would have saved her.

I’m up in the air about the Jess character. I always hate shows/films, like The Punisher, that kill off the beautiful wife in the first five minutes, allowing her to serve as an idealized muse for the rest of the episode/flick.

Her needy fragility makes her the total opposite of Carter, which is another reason I wondered why Reese stalked our hardcore cop. But, the minute I saw the Jess flashback, followed by Carter defining a good relationship, I knew Reese and Carter would never get together.

Reese and Snow
Snow clearly had it out for Reese from day one. When he denied Reese’s leave request for a mission that could’ve waited either for Reese to return, or could’ve gone ahead, but given Reese catch up time, seemed odd. Didn’t Snow say Reese and Cara would have two weeks of surveillance time? Also, his claiming other operatives didn’t exist, while sending Cara and Reese, who just came off another high tension op, seemed odd. When the accompanying operatives expressed the need to get Reese and Cara in quietly and take their cellphones felt off. Also, emphasizing the need for low-key, but then telling Reese and Cara to flare attention-tracking beacons made no sense. If the two were hotly pursued, flaring beacons meant they wouldn’t receive instant recall, but would call attention to themselves. Either way, Snow knew Reese wanted to go home; but, pushed Reese into a death sentence. Did Reese and Cara witness something that warranted their cancellation?

Reese’s Cop Assets
I don’t like Reese’s treatment of Carter and Fusco. At the end of the day, they’re cops doing their jobs, sanctioned by the law. Although Reese and Finch pretend they have a higher calling, they’re just a high-tech community watch, with a cool-looking bat cave. Reese blatantly disrespecting cops while calling them “assets” for an op sanctioned by two guys hanging in a basement is wrong. And, I don’t like when Fusco and Carter look to Reese for all the answers.

Finally, what is up with Reese’s savior complex? Until last week, Reese obsessed over Carter; but this week flipped to Fusco. I loved Finch’s implied, “really, dude? You’re flipping to a new cop muse, already?”

Although Fusco loves his kid, aren’t criminals supposed to avoid spending cash before/after they receive a new influx? Isn’t that leaving a trail?

The Core Four
Although I secretly felt Carter and Fusco should’ve left Reese to his fate, the episode’s core occurred when they didn’t. Despite Reese’s dickish actions, Carter still appeared at the hospital to save him. I loved watching him slowly lean on her for support, reflecting his vulnerability and the clear change in their relationship from protector and protectee. I loved when Finch frantically called Carter and his visible relief at Reese’s safety. Despite his occasional concern, I wondered if Finch ever saw Reese outside of his killing machine role. This week alleviated my fears. I loved the comaradarie of Carter and Reese leaning over the phone talking to Finch. I want to see more of those group moments. Finally, when Fusco killed the evil captain for Reese? Wow. I know Reese wants to keep everyone separate, but he shouldn’t.

I suddenly realized these four need each other for survival. Finch barely mastered the two-eyed poke. Carter trusts almost anyone who crosses her path. Reese can’t stop throwing himself wholeheartedly into harm. These four need each other to survive.

Yet, Reese also places Fusco and Carter in more danger. Turning Fusco paints a bigger target on his back and stalking Carter brought Snow into her life.

Thoughts:

  • Do CIA agents EVER stay dead? (at least on TV?)
  • I love listening to Carter speak the audience’s thoughts about trusting a guy she knows the least about.
  • Have you noticed Carter and Fusco use Reese as a therapist/confidant, but it isn’t reciprocated?
  • I love that Finch keeps warning Reese about Carter. Previously he warned Reese she’d catch him. She didn’t. (OK, she kinda did). Tonight he warned she’d find out about Fusco. However, I doubt she will. Reese will probably give in or she’ll stumble on it the way she did with Finch and Reese. (OK, so, she might find out).
  • Would it really hurt Reese to work a case with Carter, considering it would assuage her concerns? Admittedly, Carter can’t go undercover and would probably stop him from doing anything TOO illegal, but couldn’t he use her as a sounding post (or conference her into his non-machine Finch talks)?
  • When Reese showed Carter the photo, she scanned the section where the guy sat, indicating a) her observational skills and b) her realization that Finch and Reese rarely use restaurants to eat food.
  • It felt odd watching a flat-haired Reese not in a position of power, although it explains why he no longer trusts as fully. In a way, he was Carter. But, I wonder if his mistreatment of Carter as an asset will eventually make her more like him. If her unit’s betrayal and her snitch’s betrayal didn’t make her paranoid, will working with Finch and Reese do the job?

Great observation Nicholson, thanks and this show is Awesome.

Thanks, Mary! Agreed. It is awesome.

I’m really enjoying this show. However, if the writers want to take the next step from “good” to “great” (or “great” to “outstanding”), they’ll need to introduce some more complex characters and do some things we don’t expect. Nothing in the backstory of this episode was surprising, even though it was enjoyable. One thing I might like to see is a bloody resolution to the Carter-Fusco issue that results from John keeping secrets. The season ending with Fusco’s death would make me stand up and take notice, though I would miss the character. The Big Bad mafia boss is a good one and they picked the right actor, so they need to focus on that – bumping off the omnipresent CIA villain would be a good start. They don’t have to connect all the bad guys, though. Just my rambling thoughts.

Hey Adam –

I’m currently enjoying the overarching mystery of Elias and the CIA, so I don’t want that resolved yet. I believe incorporating Carter into the Scooby gang, made the first transition from good to great. However, agreed. I’d prefer to watch more character interaction i.e. Carter-Reese-Finch grow closer together over anything else.

I think that John yanked Fusco’s chain one too many times and greatly underestimates him. John’s a dude without any protection who keeps threatening a legally and HR-protected Fusco. And, he foolishly uses Fusco to follow the other two people closest to him – Finch and Carter. Eventually, Fusco’s going to use Finch against Reese. Or he’ll let Carter know about the bobble-head. Although Carter now doubts Fusco, she’s also the only person who trusted him wholeheartedly in “F&B”, so I doubt he’d hurt her. While I’m not ready to see Fusco die, maybe showing Fusco make more machinations against John wouldn’t hurt (and if they could shave down Chapman’s hair to look more like the badass in Brotherhood, that’d be great).

It’s funny, despite watching him in Flashpoint. Enrico Colantoni is always Veronica’s lovable detective dad for me. While I’m not ready for Snow’s death either, connecting HR with Snow isn’t a bad idea. I also secretly suspect Jess is still alive.

Thanks for writing in!

Hi,

I enjoyed reading your thoughts on POI. I have a few theories of my own that I thought I would post for your consideration and feedback.

First, I must say that I’ve enjoyed Carter’s evolution. Primarily because it wasn’t forced. It has happened naturally as a result of things happening in and around her character.

I read a comment by one of the producers that the next episode will open up the relationship between Reese and Carter and Carter and Finch. Now I found that very fascinating. It left me with this… I see Carter being drawn into the Reese and Finch inner circle and Fusco being pulled closer to HR. Interesting- the tracks Carter and Fusco started on and where they’re headed.

Based on the producer’s comment and the summary for the next episode…I think Finch realizes he can rely on Carter more. That he can trust her. Remember he was the one that was adamant that she not know about the machine. But I think he will see that he can trust her and perhaps in the season finale he tells her about the machine or brings her to their HQ/the library. I don’t see her going into Season 2 as in the dark as she is now.

Ok, as far as Reese and Carter. I think they have handled that relationship wonderfully. I think we will see Carter caring more about Reese as a person. How he will react I’m not sure but it should prove interesting. Reese is breaking down walls with Carter now the curious thing is whether that is happening on Reese’s side too.

Finally, the concept of an “asset” will continue to pop up. Reese referred to Carter and Fusco as assets (in at least two scenes). Finch has pushed back on that….particularly in the last episode. I bet Reese’s feeling about “assets” will change. You saw it at the end when Fusco talked about why Reese chose him. A realization about what he was doing and the impact on Fusco was caught in his expression. That was clearly important by the way the camera held on him.

I love this show and can’t wait for the three new episodes. I have a feeling they won’t disappoint.

April 29, 2012 at 9:51 AM

One more thing… just something to think about.

I noticed that in the scene between Ingram and Finch talking about the machine…I noticed that it was a pre-injured Finch I was seeing. Someone posed that Finch was tortured to get info and perhaps we’ll learn Ingram was killed during that same interrogation.

You mentioned that you thought Jessica is actually alive. See, I think Ingram is alive. I think he’s alive and not the good friend that Finch believes. I just have a nagging suspicion that Ingram is behind some of this. Working with Stanton maybe…not sure but there’s something there.

Why? Because another thing that keeps cropping up in this show is idea that people aren’t what you think. The machine spits out names that may be the victim or the bad guy or both as in the last episode. Reese thought Cara was his partner but she turned on him. Carter thinks Fusco is the bad guy but he is actually working with Finch and Reese. Carter thought Snow was on the level but we learned last week all the lies he told regarding his relationship with John, Cara’s death, etc.

What would be the ultimate betrayal for Finch? That Ingram was a mastermind behind some of the nasty events surrounding the machine. Yep, that would send him over the edge. I can definitely see Michael Emerson giving an Emmy winning performance with that bit of information.

And I agree with your comment to Adam. I wouldn’t be surprised if Fusco in season 2 becomes less of a pawn. As he grows closer to HR I don’t see him allowing Reese to handle him like he is now. I think we are in for some interesting changes in our characters.

Just my two cents.

April 29, 2012 at 10:05 PM

Hey Harper,

I’m glad to see you like POI as much as I do.

Although I love the Reese-Carter connection, Reese treats Fusco and Carter like CIA assets in a warzone. But, he no longer works for a huge company that will avenge his death or financially reward his assets for their help. The only reason Fusco and Carter follow Reese is their desire to do the right thing. Reese needs to start building relationships with both rather than mocking them and holding them at arms length. Eventually, Carter might permanently leave and Fusco might permanently turn against Reese. He should realize outside a warzone, he doesn’t need ‘assets.’ He needs friends and allies.

Fusco looks like a chubby detective with a terrible afro who foolishly went corrupt. But, condescendingly telling Fusco he’s getting good at his job (both as a cop and a dirty cop), made me want to slap Reese.

I don’t think Ingram is alive. However, I suspect he betrayed Finch and caused Finch’s limp. Remember when Ingram asked Finch to pop the top and then asked Finch if he could truly tell the identity of the guy attempting to tunnel into the network’s ip address? I suspect it was Ingram borrowing the guy’s identity. ooh, what if Ingram and Snow collaborated in the past?

Great thoughts! Keep them coming!

April 30, 2012 at 11:32 PM

The writers were very careful in Reese not calling Carter an asset. He called Fusco an asset. He said, He’s protecting an asset; Finch knew he was talking about Fusco. Not Carter. I am not saying he doesnt look at her as an asset, but he did not utter those words and he seemed annoyed with Finch for questioning his judgement to not tell Carter about Fusco. Also, Finch asked Reese to be honest with Carter not Fusco. You guys are watching the show and jumping the gun. Your judgement is all the way off…I think what will make Fusco interesting if he was working for the FBI or some other agency and working all different angles. I mean he saved Reese not because he likes him, because Reese is very condescending towards him and Fusco is smart enough to know the difference. I think Fusco part in the show will take a very dark path; he is only on the show for a couple of seasons (my prediction), so the writers have to make you hate him and he has to redeem himself in the end to die off with respect.

April 29, 2012 at 11:47 AM

I’m with Mary, excellent review and comments about the show. It just keeps getting better, and better. I particularly enjoyed Fusco’s comments to Reese near the end, “that is why you picked me in the first place”. Also the fact that it looks like our CIA bad guy has been bitten with his twisted past now catching up to him–has real promise for future episodes.

April 29, 2012 at 8:02 PM

Thanks, Bob! You’re right. Snow is my favorite CIA bad guy. I hope he isn’t down for the count. Considering Cara didn’t shoot to kill, I suspect the two will eventually team up to go after Reese.

April 30, 2012 at 7:16 AM

First of all, I really enjoy great thoughts here, and I think Cara may regret not asking any questions and just getting the job done with Reese case, Snow is my favorite CIA bad guy too, and I personally do not like any extra emotional bonding between Carter and Reese, I would prefer it professional, I like the way Finch and Reese are, and so far Finch is the only one who did not attempt to kill John on purpose, aside from throwing him in to harm which is part of their agreement, Finch seems to care for John and be there for him, and Jim Caviezel is doing excellent job portraying Reese character, I am a JC big fan.

April 30, 2012 at 8:26 AM

Hey Mary – Agreed. We have had some great POI discussions this week. Also, agreed, I love JC in this role and his subtle facial inflections. I always wondered what Finch might do if John disappeared. Would he start over? Or would he miss his friend? “Super” implied the former, this week the latter. I understand your concern, but I love JR and JC together because she brings out his softer, more caring side.

April 30, 2012 at 10:09 AM

Hi and Thanks Ann, well I think John is enjoying his friendship with Finch, who does not bug him and is trying to be a good and cooperative boss, and in E18: “Identity Crisis” after they arrived back at their office (Library, Finch called Reese, Nathan, and we still do not know what is John’s real name but, my guess is that Finch sees different aspect of John and likes him as a friend, and it is Finch who always use the word Friend referring John. I love seeing softer John too, and JC looks even more Dashing when he smiles,

April 29, 2012 at 2:31 PM

Great review and insight on POI. I think Reese sincerely feels the need to protect Carter. Reese said something very interesting to Carter while sitting and facing her in the coffee shop. He said something like is there another agency following you that I don’t know about. And how did Reese’s ex-partner find Snow? Reese didn’t seem happy that the CIA has been harassing Carter. This could be off the charts, but could Reese have given his ex partner Snows whereabouts to get him off Carter? Reese definitely will continue to be Carter’s guardian angel because as he once told her “her moral compass was pointed in the right direction. Reese also asked Finch to keep an eye on Carter.

While I don’t see a love connection between Reese and Carter. Reese definitely sees in Carter everything that he’s not.

April 29, 2012 at 9:39 PM

Thanks, Ann. I didn’t catch Reese’s comment about other agencies following Carter, but considering the FBI, CIA, her own guys, sometimes HR and sometimes the mob already track her, if anyone else follows her, she’ll have her own entourage.

I mentioned Reese’s swoon-worthy concern for Carter in “Super” in my POI-monthly musing and Finch’s version of keeping an eye on Carter. Although I doubt Reese knows Cara returned, I do hope he continues to work with Carter!

April 30, 2012 at 10:56 PM

I do not think Reese is just using Carter as a tool. I do think Reese is using her to keep her near. He really doesn’t need another police tool. So why use her. I know…I know, because the CBS bosses ordered it, but how can the writers make it interesting and make it fit; how can they sale it? I wouldn’t write off Carter and Reese’s potential relationship just yet. I think they may get romantic involved, but he would have to make the first move, because she is clueless.
At the start of Matsya Nyaya, Reese and Carter was having a drink and she was complaining about the trust, Reese will never be able to extend…I mean he’s a rogue, come on. Anyway, why would he invite Carter to drink on the pretense of discussing their relationship, when Carter would have happily came along for the arrest without the drinks. So the the mad lady coming in with the gun was already thoroughly vented and we know this from previous shows; Finch and Reese find everything about their POIs. He didn’t help Carter because he didn’t find the mad woman with the gun a threat; he also didn’t allow carter to help with the armored truck, because he’s a rogue and didn’t want to worry about her saftey. He only had Finch call her to the gym to arrest the POI; he said he will have the POI as a package for her to arrest, not for backup. Carter may not be the Jessica we think we know; but Reese still doesn’t want her to break a nail.

May 1, 2012 at 4:51 AM

Loved reading all the comments. I’m so into this show and enjoy reading different perspectives on it.

RE: Snow I know a lot of people here like him but I have to say I don’t. He lied to Carter and he’s tracking Reese with the plan to kill not capture him. And that’s But not about the agency business…I think its about fixing his I miss his ass in China screw up. Also he is breaking one of the rules of the CIA. That agency isnt supposed to act on US soil, that’s the domain of the FBI. Now I know the CIA does a lot of stuff in secret but that’s a pretty big thing and I’m surprised that Carter didn’t question Snow on that when he first came to her or at least when the FBI also got involved. Because if Snow is on the up and up why is the FBI also chasing Reese. If the CIA chase is legit wouldn’t they be working together? And finally when Snow told her to stop talking to the FBI regarding Reese that should have really got her thinking…this guy is all wrong…ie. dirty.

RE: Carter and Fusco. I think Reese sees Carter as the good he wanted to be….maybe even was before the CIA got hold of him. I think he sees Fusco has the bad guy they turned him into. The sad part about it is no matter that Reese is doing good now and Fusco has done some really good things and he’s working with them Reese won’t let Fusco out the bad guy box just as he thinks the good guy in him is gone (he said as much at the end of the Dr. Tillman episode.)

Re: Carter Taraji Henson wants the show to delve more into her backstory and I agree that would be interesting. Right now they seem focused on evolving her character. There’s that line she mentioned to Reese in the Legacy episode. I think one of the questions they are posing with Carter is how far over that line is she willing to go? Clearly she has crossed it but how far beyond it will she go? So…I see the finale taking this question head on because I’m betting that Reese is captured by the FBI in the finale. And Carter must decide if she will take on the FBI to get him back.

Re: Season Finale Ok, here are my thoughts. We know the concept of the show. Reese is helping a psychologist get away from bad guy patients and he gets stuck in high surveillance part of NYC with the FBI closing.
I think he will have a choice…he can save the POI but be caught. I think he saves her but falls into an FBI trap.
I think we will see Carter go from passively lying to the FBI to actually going up against them. That would be a heck of a story arch for her character if you consider where she started.

Okay my last comment…

Re: Reese and Carter As I said in my earlier comment I’ve enjoyed the way they’ve handled the chemistry between them. It has naturally come as part of their work and not forced on the audience because she’s the only woman and he’s the lead actor. As far as it being solely professional…I think they’re beyond that. Just as its not solely professional between Finch and John. Despite hiring him as a tool Finch has come to think of Reese as a partner. He has even called him that. And Reese has managed to peck away at the wall Finch put up. That scene in the diner in Judgement. The comment Reese made to the homeless woman at the end of Risk about someone looking after him now. Finch was clearly affected by what he heard. And in Number Crunch, the garage shooting…the look on Finch’s face when Reese was signally that he wasn’t going to make it…that wasn’t professional. That was Finch caring about this person.

So what we’ve seen with Carter is the same kinda progression. The game changer I think was when Reese saved her son. I get the impression that Carter has been relying on herself so when this man stepped in and saved the most important person in her life I think it affected her. So in a season where Reese and Carter haven’t really had any physical contact (save for her helping him into the limo after the shooting) we see in the last episode two instances….at the hospital and in the end on the street corner when Reese reunited Carter with her son. I didn’t see it in the show but in a fan video you can see her take his hand as she thanks him. Now good writers dont put things into scenes willy nilly. Words and actions all have meaning. I see a progression. There is definitely a different vibe from Carter since Flesh and Blood.

I see Carter becoming more personally involved with Reese. This next episode will tell me for sure. Now I dont want “oh I’m into you” kinda revelation. That would make it cheesy. But there is some chemistry there that they’ve been playing with and I hope they continue. I don’t want to project where it will go…just want to enjoy the ride. It has been interesting so far.

Well written Harper, really good points. Well about Carter I would like to add that Reese said this in Get the Carter episode that she is a good cop and a good person that world cannot afford to lose, he is correct, Carter showed potential of being a valuable addition to their team not just an asset, when she showed her interest to prevent crimes, obviously in case of that spouse abuser in E:09, that she went to the man herself warning him, apart from that she has been to the war and as we suppose she lost her husband too, Reese relates to her, and has soft spot for her, and she deserved it, and about Fusco, he is an important part of their team, I think not just an asset considering saving Reese’s life twice in E:8 and this last one, and Finch’s life in E:18, and of course Finch and Reese helped him several times. Yesterday I saw the Promo of E:21, It was mind blowing, I am really looking forward to the coming episodes, POI is really worth watching show, really addictive too, the writers are doing Excellent Job providing such intriguing story line, and what can I say about well chosen, outstanding and brilliant actors of the show, Amazing.
POI dear fans keep up writing your beautiful comments, Thanks to everyone particularly to An Nicholson.

Hey,

FYI…the new extended clip for Thursday’s episode is up on the cbs website.

It shows the opening scene with John reading that book and Finch giving him the day off. There’s a cute little display of dry humor at the end. One of the reasons I love this show is the fact that the writers can write that kinda thing but more importantly the actors have the talent to pull it off.

May 2, 2012 at 6:53 PM

Love this show. Is it Thursday yet. OK I have gone back and watched some clips. Carter is definitely clueless to Reese’s flirting especially in the back seat of her car when he responds “to each is own.” The way Reese looks at Carter is so sexy. I don’t think the writers are ready to bring these two together just yet. Too many episodes to go and they must keep it interesting. But there are a lot of hints. A cliff hanger would be Carter getting kidnapped by Elias’ or Snow’s people to pull Reese out. And you know Reese will move heaven and earth to save Carter.

May 3, 2012 at 4:53 PM

It’s Thrusday…FINALLLLLLY! Mee too. Just love the show. I haven’t been into a show like this in so long.
Okay, comparing Reese’s overt and sly flirting scenes:

1. Slides in Carter’s back seat in Wolf and Cub and says to her “Miss me Detective?”
2. Yep, sees guns in back of Carter’s car and says to her “Girl after my own heart.” in Code Blue.
3. The look Reese gave Carter when she said she wouldnt work with them again in Baby Blue.
4. The look between Carter and Reese as she cuffed the bad guy in Legacy.
5. That look between Carter and Reese in Baby Blue when he teased about feeding Leila.

There may be others but those were the ones I definitely saw myself.

May 3, 2012 at 4:59 PM

Here’s what I will be looking for tonight in Many Happy Returns:

1. Will Fusco go further toward the dark side?
2. Will Carter and Finch’s relationship change? Ex. Will he see that he can trust her with more secrets?
3. How far beyond the line will Carter go with this episode? If she does what will prompt this? Reese?
4. Will we see a progression of Carter and Reese’s relationship? Carter caring for Reese as a person?
5. What are the changes we see in Reese? What is his back story?
6. Did Stanton kill CIA agent Evans? Is Snow dead or alive?

That’s what I’m looking for tonight. Can’t wait.

May 3, 2012 at 5:36 PM

I like Reese a lot. I mean Finch is a good weird and Fusco always delivers. I only like Carter when she is interacting with Reese and Finch. We know the least about her and I believe she is more guarded than Finch and Reese. I wonder what motivates her. I know the writers want the audience to view her in a “morally mature” light and she can not move to the dark side too much, because then we will get confused. I can’t think of anything interesting they can do with Carter’s character other than fall in love with Reese, he pushes her away and breaks her heart and she pays Reese back by betraying him. I mean Finch is the brain, Reese is the muscle, Fusco personality falls somewhere in between both Reese and Finch. Carter is the female interaction with the guys. See,I can not place her yet. I do not want the show to peak too soon, but we are dealing with movie writers who are used to packing a whole story in 1-2 hour. I can’t wait either.

May 3, 2012 at 5:52 PM

I can’t wait to see what Reese will do to that wife beater tonight. He looks even sexier when he’s angry. Not sure how much more Carter will take with Reese taking the law into his own hands. She is torn between keeping the law while taking down the bad guys. Did not appreciate Reese not thanking Fusco for saving his life. Interesting what Fusco said to Reese “That’s why you picked me remember”. The look on Reese’s face was one of grave concern. Was he also thinking that he “picked” Carter too. And now may cause the ruin of a decent cop. Can’t wait to see how things pan out when Carter finds out that Reese has been working with Fusco all along. Don’t underestimate Carter. But I still love Reese–those eyes, the way he walks, his voice and those broad shoulders. AND YES HE LOOKS GREAT IN A SUIT.

May 3, 2012 at 7:07 PM

I just rewatched the diner scene in Legacy between Reese and Carter. I think her line about being a cop and that there are lines that she can’t cross is important. Interesting that every since she said that she’s has been crossing lines. But she hasn’t ventured too far from the line…YET. If in the finale…she actually works against the FBI…that will be really going beyond the line. It would be interesting to see what would make her do this and how it affects her if she did. If she fooled the CIA agents it could be excused because they’re breaking the law but the FBI’s hunt for Reese is on the up and up. Going up against them is a whole different thing.

For me Carter is one of the more interesting characters because her story arch has brought her so far. I’m wondering where it will go from here. See…I think we know more about her than most of the others. We know she has a son and is a single Mom. We know that she has lines but will cross them when she believes she must.
I noticed that Reese’s trigger for Carter is that she can save a life. Whenever he says that she gets that look on her face and cross lines.

We know that Carter has felt like she had to rely on herself and that she doesn’t trust easily. She made a point of saying that she trusts Reese and Finch. I have a feeling…that she’s going to feel betrayed in the season finale… Like maybe she finds out that they have been working with Fusco and/or the doll camera and that they cloned her phone.

Anyway…that’s my take.

What do you think Finch gave Reese for his birthday? I’m guessing a Rolex watch–but I could be wrong. Anyone knows where Reese lives? will we ever find out? Presently watching Missing waiting for Person of Interest to start!!! Hope it doesn’t disappoint.

I bet he lives in a hotel. Nothing extravagant. Very basic.
Yeah, I can see Finch giving him a watch.
Watching Brian Williams’s Rock Center on MSNBC about the OBL killing.
I’m into it but can’t wait for POI show to start.

Wow…my 1st thought was he lived in a run down place. Like the one he mentioned to the ex-military guy in Misson Creep. Were those soup cans?

Reese to Finch: Send me the address and we will talk about my sensitivities later… read “u all up in my business.”
LOL

LOL…Finch’s expression when Reese went after the Marshall in the US Marshall’s office…was… Ohhh sh*tttt we are so *ucked. Priceless.

POI did not disappoint. Now we know how and why Jessica died. I thought it was so cool the way Carter pulled Reese over in the cop car. Surprised that she let him go not knowing if there was a dead body in the car. She is beginning to trust him more and more. Why did Carter keep the photo of Reese and Jessica? Did I detect a hint of jealousy? I wish my boss would buy me an apartment looking like that. And why do I get the impression that Carter will be a regular guest in that new apartment. Can’t wait to see what happens.

Finch life is so intertwined with Reese. I bet he will show up in Carter’s history too. He is so scary. I am trying to think back to see if I can place him in my past…lol. I think this episode was very heavy. I wished Reese smiled more. I mean it seems like Carter is getting crumbs of Reese’s life, which put her at an advantage and disadvantage. I do not like her snooping into his background. I do not understand why Finch couldn’t just tell her what she needed to know about Reese so she can destroy the evidence. Okay, I think I know…Finch needed Carter too do that thing women do when men are acting bad, and women try to save them. She needed to try to understand the man and perhaps develop stronger feelings for him, because now that she know what he’s been through…she can save him. He is a good honorable man that has had a bad experience and she, being a good honorable woman can not let him go down this dark path. I do not like it not one bit. Maybe Carter was jealous, but I think she will give Reese the picture. I mean physically she doesn’t have to worry about Jessica. I think it speaks volume on how Reese wanted to let Carter know he didn’t kill that guy. He wants Carter to see him in a good light. He likes her and wants her to like him and I think mission accomplished. I did not think he would actually stop the car; He wanted Carter to talk him out of killing that deadbeat.

I am loving these comments. Look for my review tomorrow. If we continue to have such a healthy debate, I’ll talk to Keith about doing a livechat aka LiveClack for the season finale.

I don’t know if I liked the episode for the episode or for what it gave us. By that I mean… I loved Baby Blue and Ghost for the episode and it gave us a lot. Ex Baby Blue Funny scenes btw Reese and Finch (Where’s the baby?) and Carter and Finch (store). Reese carrying baby and Reese trying to save baby. etc.

This episode didnt have a lot of interesting scenes just info. Ok, so I liked the info but also like good interaction between the characters. Ok, will stop whining now.

On the up side we now have a whole corner of the Reese puzzle complete. We know Reese came back from China looking for Jessica and found out she was dead. He went to the house and realized Peter was not who he thought he was- wasnt a good husband. He didn’t kill Peter but likely put him in that prison.

Re: Carter – I think its interesting that Carter did just what FInch suggested she do…destroy evidence and she did it before she knew John didnt kill that guy. Carter is really beyond that line she talked about in Legacy.

I do kinda think its interesting that Carter destroyed the file but kept the pic. Now this will sound weird but this is what I got. I didnt see jealousy when she looked at the pic. For me is was more like…ah…Like an appreciation for the fact that John that he cared for someone. But I did get that digging vibe off Carter when she suspected John knew Peter’s wife. That digging thing a woman does when she suspects there’s another woman. But when she found jessica and John in the pic I didnt get a jealous reaction but her keeping the pic was curious.

Re FInch: Ok it is spooky that Finch was the one in the wheelchair. Man…that was so cool how they did it at the beginning but then showed us him in the wheelchair at the end. Also, we know Finch knows what Reese does when he’s not at HQ or on a case…so he doesnt respect his privacy. Also what kinda place Reese was living in. He knew Reese played chess in the park. He also knew about Reese and Jessica way before he hired him. Jessica’s number was one of the ones that kept showing up as a battered wife. And clearly Finch cares about Reese.
Finally, apparently Finch wanted Carter to find out about Reese’s past. Now I don’t get why. He could have prevented Carter from finding out so much if he had just said Reese knew Jessica when Carter first asked about a connection.

I like that Reese has a place. So we will likely see him there too and not just at HQ or the streets. That means Reese will get more of a life…I assume. Will Carter be there? Who knows but will be anxious to find out.

Oh and I love the idea of a live chat. That would be cool.

Oh last comment about last night. I love that Reese wanted Carter to know that he didnt kill that guy. He could have put him in that prison and let the subject drop. But he made a point of letting her know that he didnt do it. That there is still something good in him. That was a big thing for Carter I think..knowing he wasnt an executioner. That he didnt kill that man or Peter.

I think it will be important down the line the different way FInch worked with Carter and Fusco. He was going to have Carter do what he ultimately had Fusco do. But changed his mind at the bar. Now in the end Carter found out info on John and Fusco is kept in the dark and remains on the ouside while Carter is being pulled closer to Finch and Reese.
