It came down to three … two who have been in the Bottom 3 previously, one who has not.
Between Elise, Hollie and Colton, it was the hopeful never having been in the Bottom 3 before who exited, stage left.
Colton Dixon came up short this evening, having never made an appearance in the elimination trio. Upon being called out, he was visibly disappointed but sucked it up … and then he did something I wasn’t expecting. I called it plodding and ponderous to start an Idol episode a few weeks ago — because it was not a good song to start a show — but which fit perfectly this time around. He sang the Christian-influenced “Everything” by Lifehouse once again. And he did it to outstanding effect. This time, I loved it.

Well, you took all the wind out of my sails by appreciating the performance of “Everything” this time around. I personally was blown away by the daring of the first appearance of the song, even though I agreed that it didn’t really fit the tone or style of American Idol.
Colton Dixon will not be hurt by being ousted from American Idol, but this may help him recognize where his fan base is … and perhaps where his talent comes from. [Sorry, one of those religious fanatics getting her opinion up in everyone’s face.] Colton needs to be doing Contemporary Christian Worship, and, I think, has a large fan base waiting there for him. Expect to see him receive 2012 or 2013 Dove Newcomer Award, depending on when his first album is released. [Yes, you might have seen that somewhere before. I think I said it in a previous comment.]
So, if they can oust Colton this week, will it be Phillip Squared next week? THIS is American Idol.

Believe it or not, I am a huge fan of Christian-based / flavored music.
While it’s disappointing, Colton’s ouster will not harm him. He’s got a fanbase. And you’re absolutely right: He will excel at doing Contemporary Christian Worship tunes.
I don’t doubt your appreciation of Christian-based/flavored music, Michael. You have good tastes. I just don’t think Jimmy Irvine cares too much for it.
He sounds extremely like Chris Tomlin… bodes well for his post-Idol chances in the CCM market.
