Cold Open: Campaign Time of My Life — I’ve been pretty vocal about my distate for too many political cold opens on SNL, but this one worked for me. Was a fun way to bring the losers together in a not-so-typical way.
Monologue: Josh Brolin — How is it that Brolin can simply utter an “alright” to convince me he can nail Tommy Lee Jones? Other than that, an unremarkable monologue, and — hey look — an opportunity for Jay Pharaoh to do his Will Smith impression … sigh …
Game of Thrones First Look — I will say that the show has a rather absurd abundance of boobs … not that there’s anything wrong with that. But hell, even when reading the books now, there’s a lot more boobage on the show. That’s HBO! So, yeah, I could see a 13-year-old kid helping step that up a bit for them.
The Californians — Watching Hader lose it was awesome. I thought maybe this was a real show, and it was … in the ’50s, but it was about the gold rush. I have to imagine knowing some people from California makes this skit infinitely more entertaining. I did get a kick out of Armisen’s “Wuuuuareyoudoinhere?”
America’s Next Top Empire State of Mind Parody Artist — Wow I’m so far out of it with this one. I didn’t get it at all. Well, I got some of the Internet meme folks from the beginning — Chocolate Rain‘s Tay Zonday and all that — but the rest was lost on me.
SNL Digital Short: Laser Cats 7 — Could this be the end of Laser Cats?! Actually, that’d be sorta OK with me. I mean, the skit’s been pretty funny, but even after some time off, it still feels a bit old to me. Having Spielberg make an appearance was great, especially if this was to cap it off once and for all.
Musical Guest: Gotye — I recognized that first song from a recent episode of something in the past week or so, but that’s about it. Can someone help me out with that? Maybe it’s used in a lot of stuff these days. Anyway, I liked the music and enjoyed seeing something a little different than anything either completely mainstream or over-the-top weird.
Weekend Update — Only one guest? Anyone else done with Garth & Kat? I guess the funniest part of them is that they clearly have to work off each other, and they’re having fun doing it.
Piers Morgan Tonight — “I also know what it feels like to have a black man in me.” The funniest part of the night was Samberg playing the tight wire guy, bouncing around on his groin.
Slow-Motion Hallway — This was pretty good, and finally we saw a bit of Josh Brolin again, who up to this point hasn’t show enough of himself if you ask me, as far as guest stars go. The slow-mo wedgie is what did it for me.
SNL Digital Short: Gotye Fans — Two different shorts in one episode — that’s a little uncommon. I half expected to see another Laser Cats when it came up. Wasn’t all that funny, but maybe if you follow Gotye and actually watch music videos, it hit home for you.
Prom Night — I love it when the final skit is a decent one. Makes sticking through the whole 90 minutes worthwhile. Brolin’s drunk teacher was great.
All in all I thought that was a decent SNL. I really don’t get Garth and Kat but I love Armistad and Wiig so I just deal with it. I think the best moments were definitely Hader losing it in The Californians and Samberg’s tight wire guy!
I think someone in the writers room got lost in L.A. recently based on 2 of the skits.
Glee did the Gotye song this week and it was on another show too..maybe it was American Idol?

Ah yes! It was Glee, with Bomer singing it. I actually don’t normally watch that show anymore and happened to catch that scene.
