Grimm – Did Renard’s plan pan out?

The mythology is plugging along nicely on 'Grimm' ... but the human element is taking some bumbling sidesteps.

- Season 1, Episode 17 - "Love Sick"

It’s a little strange how things move forward on Grimm.

On the one hand, the mythology aspect of the show keeps things intriguing and the questions coming:

  • As much power and influence as Renard has — whatever those powers and influences are — he’s still got some of the same problems regular folk do, namely “family.” His solution for solving those familial “problems?” Getting rid of them altogether. (Offing his cousin and the henchman should come back to bite him in the ass, no matter his standing. It seems whether you’re royalty or Vesen or Grimm, those damned in-laws (and outlaws) throw wrenches into the machine at every juncture.)
  • We saw emerging hints of history revelation fulfillment something throughout the episode regarding the key Nick’s been messing about with and which Renard is so interested in acquiring. We don’t know anything about it other than what Nick’s aunt told him: To guard it with his life.

I’m not having a problem on these fronts. The Grimm mythos is cooking along and we’re piecing together hints/clues to what may happen in the coming weeks. The human (normal?) element, however, is leaving much to be desired. There are holes all over the place:

  • Last week, we saw Juliette spurn Nick’s marriage proposal. This week? We see them hand in hand on their way to meet Hank for a double date without a care in the world. Really? Nick’s just going to blow that off as if it was nothing? Juliette is happy-go-lucky and content to remain with Nick, oblivious to the fact he’s hiding things from her? No further questions? Ignorance is bliss?
  • While Renard was clever enough to swipe the cell phone left at the double homicide before anyone could get it into evidence, let’s look at something for a moment: How long has this dude been in law enforcement, let alone a captain? Quite some time, I figure. And, with all that time under his belt, don’t you think he could do better than replace the memory of the phone with something other than a brand new SIM card that could arouse suspicion? That just didn’t make sense. At least he could have removed the card altogether, further mystifying the evidence. That at least would have been a better fit for what Nick and Hank were investigating — a complete unknown.
  • And let’s see if there are any consequences where the gang is concerned now that Hank is cured of Adalind’s curse. Nick should have quite a bit of lively and creative discussion as that guise crops up.

Back to the question posed in the title of this post: Did Renard’s plan pan out? Nope. It just left a path of destruction, big and small, with more mayhem to follow.

Notes:

  • Renard has got some pretty big cojones. He doesn’t give much of a crap when it comes to getting what he wants. He offed family, tampered with police evidence and sacrificed Adalind in order to further his (somewhat unknown) agenda.
  • The contents of Wu’s pumped stomach included coins, lip balm (the entire tube and cap), buttons, a metal bottle top, paper clips, toothpicks, a writing pen cap, one of those plastic closures from a loaf of bread and other odds and ends. Add to that sofa cushion stuffing from before and carpeting and you have a well-rounded recipe leading to getting your stomach pumped. I’m a bit sorry Wu’s cured now; I was looking forward to what his next snack would be.
  • There have been more sparks between Rosalee and Monroe in the last few episode than anything we’ve seen from Juliette and Nick over the course of the season. Hell… there have even been more between Monroe and Nick, come to think about it.
  • What now, Adalind? There’s got to be more. And, I know it doesn’t make any difference now that the “essence of Hexenbiest” is gone from her, but … what was the deal with the “beauty treatment” leeches” lovingly applied by Mom (Jessica Tuck, Millennium)? Were they to keep the “ugly” at bay when she was a Wesen?
  • Of course we’re curious about the key. What is it for? What does it unlock? What’s the deal with the markings on it? What do they tell if anything? Why do Renard and his family want it so badly?
