Let me first start out by saying IANAM (I Am Not A Musician), so I make no claims that I know that the hell I’m talking about at all here.
There’s no question that Garage Band on the iPad is simply awesome. It’s fun to play with; it’s fun to listen to. It makes a quasi-musician out of pretty much anyone — it simply makes you want to make music with it. The latest version of the software came with a few neat features, one of those being the “smart strings” instrument. Along with guitar, drums, bass and keyboards, you now have another set of instruments at your fingertips: violin, viola, cello and bass (the other kind). For whatever nerdy reason, it immediately hit me that I had to try to make the Game of Thrones opening theme with these new instruments. As it turns out, it’s not that difficult to get started.
I threw together this six-minute-or-so video of how I went about it and how you can get started as well. I’d love to see someone put together a more complete version of the song using an iPad (some exist out there already for Garage Band on Mac); if that turns out to be you, please send your video(s) our way!
Anyway, hope you enjoy it.
