Over the course of Dancing With The Stars, I’ve been a casual viewer. Not a big one, just a casual one. I’ve found it to be mildly amusing and good for some guffaws as well as a few genuine “Wow!” comments here and there. I’ve even reviewed it on occasion.
And over the years DWTS has held its own. But it appears it has a little competition this season, courtesy of The Voice.
Having entered its 14th season — coupled with the lack of reality stars and political and controversial figures that drive the show — things may be a little tight for DWTS for the foreseeable future going up against The Voice on Monday nights.
But I don’t think there’s too much to worry about. Anybody who has been watching The Voice the last few weeks knows the level of competition appears to be of a much better quality on the reality dancing program rather than on the reality singing program. Because if last Monday’s The Voice was indicative of future things to come, your best bet is to begin rooting for that hunky Cuban dude and company over on ABC rather than waiting to see whether Christina Aguilera’s boobs are going to fall out her top.
I watched both programs this week and I have to tell you, I would rather have watched DWTS live than The Voice. Of course, I didn’t know that going in, hind sight being 20/20 and all. But the contestants on The Voice have really sunk to either a mediocre level at best and right on down to downright shrieky unlistenability at worst. And no, I’m not kidding. (I even have proof. Take a gander at the video if you don’t believe me.)
DWTS is still a force to be reckoned with, however. That train just needs to get chugging along in the coming weeks and tuck some episodes under its belt. Plus, its competition isn’t going to trample all over it too much before it’s over and done with, leaving Tom Bergeron and his troops all by their lonesome. And I don’t care what anyone says: Based on the rather spiffy opening-night moves of Jaleel White, Gladys Knight and Sherri Shepherd, it’s not going to need the controversy of a Bristol Palin or The Situation to keep things lively.
So don’t worry, DWTS. The ratings blips will even out and your NBC foe will be history soon enough.
Michael,
I am so glad it’s not just me… LOL! This week it was actually a relief when The Voice was interrupted by a tornado warning half way through. How sad is it when that the emergency system buzzer is easier to listen to than the singers on The Voice!!!!
I wonder if I’ve maxxed out my dvr. If not, maybe I’ll give DWTS a chance. Or, if they can’t get Christina a new hat soon, maybe I’ll give DWTS the spot currently used by The Voice. Even if I have to give up drooling over Adam and Blake. Hmmm … Gladys Knight or Christina with a miniature spaceship landing pad … not so tough choice.
I’ll have to respectfully disagree, Michael. Yes, there have been some less than stellar battle duets on The Voice, but there have been some great ones, too.
Of course, if you really dislike this season enough to be rooting for DWTS to knock it off, I’m happy to take covering it off your hands. Just sayin’.
