What’s your favorite CBS sitcom? – Poll

Admittedly, I don’t really care for any of the CBS sitcoms, so I won’t be chiming in with the rest of the Clackers this week. They have strong words in support of their favorites, though — will they sway your vote?

Julia:

How I Met Your Mother. It’s a good show, and also, it’s the only thing on this list that’s even partially watchable without filling me with a deep sense of self-loathing. Really, it’s a pretty gimme category.

Tara:

I have such limited experience with these. But I can tell you that Two and a Half Men (as loathsome as it is) was better with Charlie. When I’m in a mood when I want to slap someone? I can actually look at reruns and laugh. Mike and Molly I haven’t checked out since it first premiered. So many nasty fat people jokes. And I know I wrote about that, and still get hits on the articles. I vacillated back and forth. Which gave me heartburn. Which made me stop watching. ‘Cause I hate heartburn.

Katie:

I guess it’s a tie between How I Met Your Mother and Big Bang Theory, but I’m not exactly enthusiastic about either. Can we all agree to say no to Rob?

Michael:

2 Broke Girls: I hear there’s a twist … and I’ve had enough with twists of late.

The Big Bang Theory: I don’t see the comedy in this.

How I Met Your Mother: Never was a Neil Patrick Harris fan. I tolerate him only.

Mike and Molly: No interest.

Rob: Watched the premiere … and felt sorry for Cheech.

Rules of Engagement: Nope.

Two and a Half Men: Reviewed a few and lost interest in a flash.

Gee … I’ve been a huge help, haven’t I?

Chuck:

The only CBS comedy I watch is 2 Broke Girls … but for the life of me, I have no idea what this “twist” is that Michael mentioned! Do we find out that one of them is a ghost? Or that the whole show takes place in the mind of an autistic child? Or that it was co-created by Whitney Cummings and it’s better than her own show? Whatever it is, I enjoy the rapport between the two leads, the traditional sitcom approach and the snappy writing with a little modern spin — even though the sexual innuendo sometimes comes on a little too strong for an 8:30 PM show (a recent episode with some banter using the word “come” made my skin crawl a little).

The recent addition of Jennifer Coolidge to the cast as a neighbor with a funny accent only makes the show more endearing to me. Anyone who can find a job for Coolidge is okay in my book. And it’s nice to see Garrett Morris again too. I do like the concept that the girls are trying to raise money to start a cupcake business and we get a running total week by week of where they stand financially … ooh, wait, is that the twist?

An:

CBS is the only network that doesn’t have a show on my ‘must-see’ radar. However, I’ve watched almost all of those shows at least once.

I loved Mike & Molly last year, but stopped watching this year. I enjoy BBT in re-runs, but not enough to watch it over Community or 30 Rock. HIMYM I tolerate, but I only watch in re-runs. Rules of Engagement doesn’t seem funny at all, but I’m glad it uses actors I’ve enjoyed in other shows. 2 Broke Girls surprised me. It seemed funnier and smarter than I expected, but it still hasn’t made my regularly scheduled viewing list. Two a Half Men is a show that I barely liked with Sheen on and it felt intolerable last year. This year feels better and more fluid compared with last year. The writing seems smarter and they don’t pause as much between punchlines. But, even Kutcher‘s abs can’t make me tune in regularly. Finally, Rob: Seriously? Let’s just stop there.

In conclusion, CBS has a lot of comedies with promise and actors I respect, but none of the shows have made my TV sitcom obsession list. It’s probably because they’re all formulaic in their humor. If pressed, mmmmaybe Mike & Molly or 2 Broke Girls, but that’s pushing it. Maybe I’ll just say N\A for this week.

Aww, no love for the nerds on The Big Bang Theory? I still love that show! They remind me of myself with their comic and pop culture relics donning their apartment! Plus I think all four of the main guys are adorable in a “Just because I read comics you think I can’t start some shit?” kind of way, to paraphrase Mallrats. Plus I’m really looking forward to Leonard Nimoy‘s upcoming voice cameo on the show!

Rachel:

I’d say it’s really no contest — HIMYM is the best one. I do sometimes watch BBT, and I like it whenever I see it, but I don’t need to watch the way I do with HIMYM. In general, I don’t like many CBS sitcoms and am turned off by the laugh track. But HIMYM is my exception to that rule.

Ivey:

I’m going to jump in with HIMYM as well. Independent of anything else, I love how they use non-linear storytelling and are willing to take chances with their narrative structure. Sometimes they fail, as they did this season with “The Burning Beekeeper,” but more often than not, I think it has led to some really great episodes. I’m not one of those people tied to needing to know who the mother is (Though I do get a little peeved with Bays and Thomas hint at big developments and little ones occur). I like The Big Bang Theory, too, but in many ways they’re telling the same jokes they’ve told for the last five years.
