It’s just my luck that Bob got to cover a rock solid episode of The Good Wife last week, while I got stuck with another stinker tonight. And here I thought that solid story development might be designed to arc over more than one episode … guess not.
I enjoy Dylan Baker, and Colin Sweeney has been a solid recurring character on the show, but at some point even good things can become too much. His appearance tonight crossed that very line, and he didn’t even have the decency to make up for it with a good case.
His battle for control of his company, Herald Equity Group, could have worked had it not devolved into a he said/she said battle in court with Isobel — what was Homeland’s Morena Baccarin doing here? — over her kid. I know it was played for dramatic effect, but the way in which Isobel confronted Sweeney at the shareholders’ meeting made it seem like his sexual harassment of her when she was hired produced a baby. Now that would be a marketable skill!
I see that we won’t be getting a break from Will after all. I enjoyed the time we spent with him and his sisters last week … his presence in the office this week? Not so much. Especially because so much energy was expended debating what he could and could not consult on. Who cares? And what’s the purpose of this story, since it has to have one? I figure it’ll either lead Alicia and Will to get back together, or it’s meant as room for Eli’s story to expand.
If it’s the latter, no such progress was made tonight. Eli had a piece of the Sweeney account, but not enough to give him much leverage in his battle to get his name on the firm letterhead. I think I’d even welcome a Peter run for the Governor’s mansion if it meant giving Eli some meat. In fact, I definitely would, because the uphill battle it would be to get Peter there — and he’ll never get there, of that you can be certain — would make for some great Eli TV. Yeah, let’s do that, even if it means having to endure additional unpleasant moments in the State’s Attorney’s office for a little while. Peter has no spine.
I suppose we should mention Caitlin’s story too, even if just to say, huh? Is she crazy? A few weeks back she had her eye on Will; is that who she thinks she’s engaged to? Is that who she is engaged to? And why did we take a ridiculous diversion into Caitlin this season if she was going to leave after twenty episodes? Even if she’s not, why did we take a ridiculous diversion into her story? What value was she meant to add here? We know this story is all about Alicia, so what has Caitlin’s presence done for the positive — or the negative — in Alicia’s life (other than making us suffer through countless deep looks from Alicia in anger or jealousy directed at Caitlin)?
