When we last left Bob’s Burgers we weren’t certain there would even be a season 2.
Oh … ye of little faith.
Not only were we treated to Sunday’s sophomore season premiere, we went in knowing there will be a season 3 come the fall. Yes, you heard right: Bob’s Burgers is scheduled for a season 3. Rejoice!
But let’s get to the matter at hand: What did creator Loren Bouchard and Jim Dauterive (who co-executive produces with Bouchard) lead off with Sunday night? Nothing less than a take on one of 1985’s Top Ten grossing films of the year — The Goonies. But … with plenty of twists of course.
Regular Bob’s customer Teddy (Larry Murphy, Assy McGee) hints there may be treasure at the old Caffery Taffy plant scheduled for demolition. Naturally, that spikes the interest of Bob’s precocious and oft times devious daughter Louise (Kristen Schaal) who recruits Tina (Dan Mintz) and Gene (Eugene Mirman) to assist in a clandestine adventure to seek out the possible booty. Along with a few of their friends who show up at the factory, the group gets involved in a couple minor misadventures. Bob and Linda (H. Jon Benjamin, John Roberts) show up when they find the kids missing from home (aided my Tina’s diary) and in the nick of time as the taffy factory commences being demolished just about the time they get there.
There was treasure to be found by Louise, Gene and Tina, but it went undiscovered in the end. After all, it wasn’t about its discovery … but in the adventure surrounding it. (Below is the “real” treasure of the episode — Cyndi Lauper’s revamped lyrics to her original “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough.”)
Is it coincidence Bob’s Burgers launched its season 2 premiere the night of the daylight savings time change? I think not. With many folks grumpy over the loss of an hour’s precious sleep (something I don’t understand in the least), it was all about escape … the “escape from the reality of our day to day” as I noted about last year’s season finale.
On this, of all days, I think Bob’s provided that.
And seriously: Where else can you “taste the Korean War” … ???
Notes:
“Teddy was right about the treasure … in the butt
The next day you will see Taff is washed up on the beach and
Oh, my God is that a gold bar, the wave just washed him out far
The kids didn’t look close enough in the taffy butt, you have a taffy butt
There’s treasure in the butt, I wasn’t that taffy butt …”
Quotes:
“Yeah, Teddy. Um. Sunday nights … me and Linda have uh … you know … an arrangement” …” — Bob
“Oh. Scheduled sex. Heheh. You wanna borrow my Sade tape?” — Teddy
“I can taste every flavor from the last 60 years! I can taste the Korean War!” — Gene atop taffy-making machinery
“I can taste rust!” — Andy atop taffy-making machinery
“I can taste Andy’s spit!” — Ollie atop taffy-making machinery
“Dear Diary tonight we’re sneaking into the dangerous taffy factory. Also, if boys had uteruses, they’d be called duderuses.” — Tina’s journal entry
“Gene … what did I tell you about finger quotes?” — Bob
“Not to do them. But ironic detachment is great! Nothing means anything!” — Gene
“We should probably pray. Dear God: This is Tina … from school …” — Tina
“Don’t worry Louise! We’re going to get you out!” [turns to Bob] “How are we going to get her out?” — Linda
“Maybe we should smoke her out!” — Gene
“Louise! Are you sure there isn’t something down there you could use to climb out?” — Bob
“Oh wait: Here’s a grappling hook! Oh, ho ho! And here’s an escalator! Silly me!” — Louise
“We’re about to die Louise! Do you want your last words to be sarcastic!?” — Bob
“NooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooo … !!!” — Louise
“I got it! Let’s all spit in the pit and she can swim to safety!” — Zeke
I LOVED this episode–didn’t realize how much I had missed this show! Andy & Ollie are so funny–they don’t use them enough. And “Taffy Butt” at the end was so amazing–I couldn’t believe they got Cyndi Lauper to sing it! (I have already listened to that at least 10 times!)

Andy & Ollie are hilarious, Kyle.
I’m still humming “Taffy Butt” …
When you say it’s been scheduled for a season 3 do you mean that they’re splitting season 2 in half and calling the second half season 3? Because it originally got picked up for a 13 episode second season and then they added 9 episodes to that. With it starting this late in the game I’d doubt that they’d run it into summer. Is there a source to your season 3 news?

Jon:
I was in the pressroom with Loren, Jim and the cast during Comic-Con last year and got the opprotunity to speak with Loren at length. The details were sketchy, but Season 2 was confirmed with more for a Season 3 in the works. At that time, there was only a 13 episode Season 2 scheduled. (The added 9 episodes you mentioned came later.)
Then, I sat in on a conference call with Loren and Kristen Schaal last Thursday. Loren detailed the fact that Seasons 2 and 3 are not segregated the way they would like, but the most likely scenario will be that holdovers from Season 2 will leach into Season 3. Season 3 will then begin in the fall of this year and yield a full 22-episode season.
Good news, eh?
Humph.
I came, I saw, I didn’t share your overwhelming love.
I did, though, like the “if you could draw a treasure map …” bit.

It’s quite apparent (a grumpy) someone didn’t hum “Taffy Butt” while they were getting ready for bed last evening …
No, I was humming the theme from The West Wing, which I had to watch after this experiment to make me feel good about television in general.
I love this show. About 40% of that comes from H. Jon Benjamin, but 60% is the rest of the show. I’m so glad it’s back.
