Whoa.
This was one kick-ass episode of Grimm.
We got everything a fan could ask for out of this episode: Snarkery from Monroe, involvement from Juliette, Hank got his panties in a wad (courtesy of the coins), nifty action, backstory on Nick, interesting interaction with Captain Renard, some nice asides from everyone’s favorite ME Parker and history up the wazoo. Who could ask for anything more?
Well … how about a 3rd Reich/Hitler/Grimm connection? Because, yep, we got that, too.
There was plenty to squeal about:
- Captain Renard’s visions of grandeur while in possession of the coins. We still don’t know the
good mysterious captain’s agenda in the grand scheme of things, but we do know he’s not perfect, as was evidence of the coins holding dominion over him. (I’m certain fans of the female persuasion found their hearts aflutter at the sight of Sasha Roiz. shirtless. An? Am I off base here?)
- Sgt Wu has got some computer skills. He zapped Marquesa’s vehicle plate out of obscurity in nothing flat while Hank and Nick were investigating the Bertram robbery. (Sure … it’s television and these things need to be dealt with in a timely manner. No investigation clips along at the pace of any television police procedural, but it was a nice little sidestep of Wu’s character. P.S. There needs to be an episode with a bigger role for Reggie Lee. Period.)
- I would have been completely content in the garage with Colt having frisked Renard and escaping with the coins, leaving Nick and Hank in his wake. Would have made a spiffy “Now what?” ending that could have been explored later on in the series. But no … the writers had other ideas. Nick recovers the coins after he tracks down Colt and hides them in Aunt Marie’s trailer. I was scratching my head there, wondering about Nick’ personal constitution regarding his police code. (Not to mention the fact he pilfered the coin box from the station’s evidence room.) But let’s face it: The coins are too damned dangerous. And who better to be guardian of them than Nick, a Grimm whose strong-willed caliber is virtually impervious to the coins’ powers?
- But it went even farther than that. The jaw dropping moment of the show was when Nick reviewed the film back in the trailer. Colt noted The Third Reich was in possession of the coins at one point in history, “And we all know how that goes.” But to see archival footage of Hitler spouting his rhetoric and all of a sudden morphing into a Wesen? (It was a Blutbad we saw him turn into.) Well … rather nifty, eerie stuff. (Seeing two of the coins on either of Hitler’s lapels was a nice touch, too.)
- Titus Welliver as Farley Colt continues to showcase yet another terrific actor as a Wesen. (This time a Steinadler, a mysterious hawk creature.) This follows on the heels of Amy Acker in “Tarantella” and Jaime Ray Newman in “Three Bad Wolves.”
- Loved all the mythology injected into the story of the Coins of Zakynthos:

This was by far one of the most intriguing episodes, the history of the coins, the back-story, and Hitler’s turn as a Blutbad is just amazing. Also the touch with the captain starting a new empire or w/e using the lion’s head instead of the swastiska is very graceful and alluring.
This show has me hooked, I hope the rest of the episodes of this season continue along this eps. path and the show becomes a bit more serial. I’d like to see some plot developments outside of standalones (but don’t get me wrong, the standalones have all been amazing. I just want this to be a show with a good serial plot going along with it).

All I have to request now is a set visit in lovely Portland.
This is one show that just keeps getting better. I am surprised that it doesn’t do bigger ratings–I found it to be much more interesting than either “Once Upon a Time”, or “Revenge”. Yet, both of those shows seem to be pulling a bigger audience.
I tried OUaT three times, not consecutively, and I just don’t get the hype around that show. Grimm is far superior and it does keep getting better. Oh, I’m reminded of Buffy — did I dare to say that out loud? ;-)
I think you should give Once Upon another shot, catch up on On Demand. It’s gotten much deeper since the beginning shows, that were just building background. I think it’s just as good as Grimm.
I watch Once Upon and Revenge as well. I think Grimm’s Friday night spot, a date night, keeps it out of young people’s radar, even tho it IS on On Demand.
I agree this episode was pretty darn good! The quote about the baby-eating bad asses will follow me for a while I think , haha.
Well he wasnt a Blutbad but a Schakal like the guys who were after the coins.

Okay, I LOVE this show, and I too screamed in laughter when I saw Hitler morph! But, I am just not believing that Renard is in such control he can fool Nick. And I’ve seen creatures morph under what I consider stressless circumstances. They need to tie this Renard thing up. It’s just not believable.
Have we confirmed that Hitler was a blutbad or something else? Sometimes it’s hard to tell these creatures apart.
