In retrospect, I felt I was actually pretty kind in my review of last week’s How I Met Your Mother. The idea of putting Ted and Robin back together seemed so tired to me that I couldn’t imagine that the show would actually spend any story time dedicated to it. Well, technically I guess I could imagine it, as the arc had been foreshadowed earlier in the season. But things turned out not at all as I expected.
I think I “get” Ted better than most people do. Don’t tell anyone, but it is because we have a lot in common – but hopefully not too much. Because of that, though, the idea that he has never fully gotten over Robin is something I understand. Their promise to get together at 40 if they were both single is definitely the type of thing that would trip Ted up. I’m just glad Robin didn’t buy into the idea as full-heartedly as he did. It was heartbreaking to see him cancel out that promise, but it was something he had to do if he was really going to be able to move on.
Tougher still for Ted was his realization that there was still something between Barney and Robin. I was happy to see Barney be completely truthful with Ted about what had happened between them this year – it is a nice change of pace from the first time Barney and she had a fling. What is not so good for the Barney/Robin shipper in me: the nonchalance with which the Barnacle said he was over her. I’ve still got faith in the two of them, but moments like that make it much harder to hold on to hope.
As bad as things might look for Ted right now, he has got a friend like Marshall. I don’t think I’ve ever been more impressed by one of the characters on HIMYM as when Marshall spoke to Robin about moving out. The sincerity of that moment, and the idea that Marshall would go to her without Ted’s knowledge — bros before hos indeed.
Did you catch Conan O’Brien in the background of one of the MacLaren’s scenes? If you missed it, I grabbed a screenshot. O’Brien apparently won the cameo as a charity prize. Good for Coco! Did his hanging out in the background in a bar scene remind anyone else of his time as a writer for Saturday Night Live?

- Marshall bets Lily that Robin will never return their hairdryer
- Lily bets Marshall that Ted will go bald
- Marshall bets Lily that if Ted goes bald, he’ll totally pull it off

I must admit that I have been watching this show since the beginning and think that the humor,writing and story lines overall have been very good. One thing occurred to me the other day after discussing the show with coworkers and I am not sure if this has been considered/ discussed, so I apologize if I am bringing up an old debate.
People often try to figure out who Ted’s wife is (mother of the children), and since so often “Aunt Robin or Uncle Barney” is brought up, we assume that we must eliminate certain people from consideration as “Ted’s” partner. But the question I would like to throw out there is this….. Do we actually know that the kids are Ted’s? or could Ted possibly be talking to his Niece and Nephew (or whatever)? Might be a stretch, but considering after all of this time that we likely havnt met Ted’s wife, and most likely she would be someone with a strong story line, it makes me wonder if we might be searching for the “wrong person”. Again probably grasping for straws, but who knows…
I cannot recall if Ted has ever referred to the kids as his own children, but “How I Met Your Mother” does not specifically define the fact that he is the father. Make any sense???
Except… the fact that he’s telling them the story of how he met THEIR mother. I’m sure there’s that possibility that he could just be dating their mother, then they break up or whatever, and he’s just telling her kids about how him and her met, but that just seems way too far-fetched.

The one thing Narrator Ted has proven himself to be it is unreliable.
I know from a canon perspective we’re supposed to trust what he says, but it is hard to believe everything.

However see my comment to Mike. Considering Narrator Ted’s unreliability and the show’s proclivity to “fake-out” the audience (a good example was the episode where Robin was talking to her “kids”).
Why should we believe any one clue we’ve been given, other than the fact that the clues are there in the first place (and there’d be nothing else to go on).
In one episode the narrator explicitly asks to the kids: “Am I a bad dad?”

This show is really turning into a normal, comedic and funny sitcom into some sort of soap opera. This, I simply do not like.
I am happy to report that I just don’t care anymore. The show was stellar in Season 1 and that’s why I was so angry about the directions it took now it’s just ridonkulous. To be honest I liked this season a lot I just can’t stand Lily’s dad or better the actor who plays him. There’s definitely NOT something about that actor and I keep imagining boils on his face every time I see him. Yuck.
Anyway American Pie 4 can’t come soon enough if you ask me. Finally Hannigan in a role that does not suck. Hopefully movie money allowed them to not film her double chin all the time. I really don’t understand why she keeps making faces that were cute on Willow but just aren’t with her being 20 years older and everything. I know that’s shallow but this is TV and it’s supposed to have a higher production value than her standing in front of her bathroom mirror in the morning asking Alexis do hand her a towel.
I mean last week during the first club scene the producers forgot the ambient music. So yeah you were pretty kind to that trainwreck of a production even though I liked the writing.

Though, giving back the key before packing up one’s things does seem a bit odd :)
