Has anyone else been missing The Good Wife for all the months that it’s been gone? I suppose it’s to the show’s credit that it only feels like we’ve been away for a few weeks … oh, that’s right, it has only been a few weeks. So why have all manner of places, including Entertainment Weekly, been lauding the midseason return of the show? Am I missing something, or is someone desperately trying to get word-of-mouth going for a show that lacked in oomph the first half of its third season?
It definitely didn’t find any of the legal variety this week. Interesting, however, is the evolving battle between Eli and divorce super lawyer David Lee, and I loved how Lee’s niece, Caitlin (Anna Camp), became a pawn in their little power struggle. I hope that Caitlin’s concern that she’d upset Eli wasn’t an indication that Eli gives up that easily … all David said to him was that his niece is just about the only thing that he loves. And? She’s still a first year associate, and Eli is still in a position to make her pick things up after they’ve fallen off the corner of his desk. I hope he’s not done picking on David through her.
Nevertheless, I do hope that we’re done seeing “Alicia Light” fill in for the real thing. Mrs. Florrick may have fallen on her face this season, but that doesn’t mean that Alicia doesn’t bring a good game when she’s called upon to practice law. Caitlin may conduct some great research, but at the end of the day we’re all (hypothetically) here to see Alicia, so why not move past the part where Eli’s always scratching his head looking for Alicia and have her actually show up to work with him when she’s called upon? Not that I wouldn’t like to see more of Eli reprimanding her, but they have a great back-and-forth, and I love to see how uncomfortable spending time with Eli generally makes Alicia. Why not capitalize on that?
What we could do with significantly less of is Stacie (Amy Sedaris) in general, and Stacie desiring Eli (and vice versa) specifically. Maybe it was just me, but it was really gross watching the two kiss, let alone watching as Stacie licked whipped cream off of Eli’s fingers. There is zero chemistry between them, and while it seems that there no longer has to be any for two people on TV to wind up sleeping together, these are two people who should never really be in the same room together, let alone the same bed. I hope the fact that Stacie’s involved with Eli’s ex-wife’s campaign won’t mean that we’ll be seeing more of her … we’re all full-up, thanks.
Now I know that the “big” topic of the episode was the Will Gardner grand jury hearing, but not for me. Some moments were okay — and Cary was great — but on the whole the entire incident was terrible. I just hope that we’ve put it behind us, and that we can finally get back to watching Lockhart/Gardner trying cases in their unique way. I’m more than ready.
Agree. We should see real cases and not bizarre twists such as the attempt to indict Will. I enjoyed the suspense though of that ham sandwich grand jury, except that is was flawed all along. The special prosecutor was contradicted and humiliated for most of the hearings and yet, she was confidently submitting a request for an indictment at the end. Also the subplot of not involving Will’s lawyer in the grand scheme (leaking a case file to the prosecutor as a diversion) did not make much sense, especially that up to now, thst maverick lawyer has always been portrayed as a super magician who could pull any rabbit at the last minute to clear her client.
Eli and especially that whole involvement with Stacie is becoming more and more boring. One last point: almost every new episode this season had been delayed by the previous reality show and that is going to hurt the ratings and possibly lead to its cancellation. A real shame and bad management.
really? im just looking for missed dialog but read your post with disbelief. i loved this episode. it was terrific except for eli and stacie—i agree- they are gross together. wendy scott carr is a perfect evil revenge seeker and that jerk with the baby–i cant stand him.
i must have said “i love this show” 3 times while watching this episode…”my secretary will validate your parking” was an all time great line….

I find myself wondering if it’s possible to enjoy a show without enjoying “the show.” Meaning, I liked the grand arcs back when Peter was in jail, and when he was running for office (as ludicrous as that was), but I’m finding this entire season’s focus on Will and Alicia, and Will’s case, to be really poor plotting. And yet whenever these same characters hit the courtroom, or in some other way ACTUALLY PRACTICE LAW? I still love it. Unfortunately this week (and most of this season) was not for me.
