The (faux) Ferris Bueller sequel commercial

So ... who got duped into thinking the ten-second Matthew Broderick Honda teaser (which we didn't *know* was a Honda teaser at the time) was a 'things-to-come' sequel to 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' ... ?

Hokay … who got duped by the Matthew Broderick spot?

Not me. Not when it comes to the nearing of The Super Bowl and the shenanigans (translation: sometimes hokey commercials) that go with The Big Game.

I’ve been talking to a lot of people on-line and off-line (and let me tell you something — some of those on-line people are pretty “off-line” if you know what I’m talkin’ ’bout, Willis) about what the original ten-second ad that appeared last week was all about:

It just had to be a teaser promo for a much longer advertisement for Fruit Of The Loom underwear or drug intervention or pet rescue or Big Mama Jama’s Extra Special Okra and Black-Eyed Peas … right? Didn’t it? Of course it did.

But what I really want to know is this: Who out there was fooled into thinking the spot for the long-awaited, much-anticipated Ferris Bueller’s Day Off sequel? (And dammit … couldn’t they have gotten Charlie Sheen to reprise his role in the thing? He would have been the only one who would still completely and totally be in character!)

No matter. Because this is a kick of a commercial, fun stuff in that there are references up the wazoo regarding FBDO:

So in the end? It didn’t make a bit of difference that it wasn’t a promo for the sequel. I don’t know about you, but I was completely satisfied with what I saw … from the use of Yello’s iconic “Oh, Yeah” right on down to the after-credit audience address. Best of all is the heaping helping of Easter eggs planted in the ad. My favorites? The reference to the Ferrari GT (“so choice” license plate on the CRV) and Bueller’s number of absences as noted by Rooney in the film (the “Chez Neuf” restaurant). How many can you identify? At last count, I caught 39 …

The thing that confused me was whether to post this commercial on CliqueClack TV — that makes sense being it will appear on television — or on CliqueClack Flicks which makes sense as well — Hello! It’s a movie!

I wasn’t fooled. Then again, I sorta have an inside ear on the potential project. I’m special that way.

I really don’t know why you post this as some kind of controversy or thing you’re confused/upset over. It’s just a fun Superbowl ad. For anyone who’s a fan of the movie, it’s a joy to watch.

. . . . .

ScottH:

I wasn’t confused. I was quite pleased with the Honda ad.

But think about it: It would have been so much better with Matthew Broderick hocking Fruit Of The Loom underwear or Big Mama Jama’s Extra Special Okra and Black-Eyed Peas … to FBDO references.

Yes, I agree, Fruit of the Loom underwear would have been awesome. However, a car really did play an important part in the whole movie. Selling the CR-V as the hot, happening Ferrari GT of 2012 is going to take a lot of viewer suspension of disbelief, but worth it if it works.

Great commercial, and, I hope, only a taste of great stuff yet to come Feb. 5th, right? And I hear they are going to have a football game featured between commercials. Not too familiar with the teams playing, but that’s usually when I get up to get a snack, anyway.

I guess I’m the only person on the Internets who didn’t really care about this ad.

I’m not trying to be a party pooper, I just … meh.
