The best TV-themed gifts – Quibbling Siblings

Every week brother and sister team Bob and Debbie take on a new topic. This week before Christmas, we talk about the best ideas for TV themed gifts.

Bob:

The holidays are fast approaching, and I can’t wait to tear into some wrapping paper and see the smiles on the faces of my loved ones as they see what I got them. With my Christmas spirit in full bloom I thought we could take some time and discuss some of the best TV themed gifts that we could give this year.

I know there are some really nice DVD sets out there. If there’s a Twin Peaks fan in your life, the Twin Peaks: The Complete Series (The Definitive Gold Box Edition) is really awesome. There are a ton of bonus features, and the show looks amazing transferred to DVD. I think the only problem with it is that any self respecting TP fan surely already has this in his or her collection.

Lost: The Complete Collection looks to be a great set, if a bit pricey. I’m thinking just about any of those full series sets would make a nice gift. Which ones would you look for in your stocking? Can you think of some outside-the-box TV gifts?

Debbie:

You are either going to love what we got you or think it’s completely insane, but either way, you’ll definitely be intrigued by it … and it is in no way TV-related, or Twin Peaks-themed. A little teaser for you!

I guess I wouldn’t mind receiving a boxed set of a show that someone would think I would love that I’ve never seen before, especially if it was a short-lived, complete series. I’m sure Brett could recommend some obscure Canadian show that would knock my socks off (I’m still wondering about that detective show he loves … if only I could remember the name of it — Endgame? Murdoch Mysteries? Tom Stone?). I get excited about discovering something new, and getting a gift I never even knew existed.

Keith is in the background chanting, “SlingBox! SlingBox!” but I regret that I really don’t know the capacity of the SlingBox’s awesomeness. Doesn’t it just play TV shows from someone else’s TV? Can I make the craptastic joke that it can’t really be considered outside the box because it is one? I guess I just did. …

I have to mention this LA Times article about TV-themed gifts — they highlight some spectacular knick-knacks that every TV fan has got to want just a little bit. My favorites were the Cougar Town throw pillow: “40 is the new 20″; the Jeff Winger bobblehead; and the Elena-inspired necklace from The Vampire Diaries.

Bob:

There is definitely something fun about getting a series that you aren’t expecting, and maybe even one you’ve never heard of. Thinking back, I’m a little surprised at just how many TV gifts I have been involved in. I still have the Shannon from Lost doll on my end table in my living room and occasionally can be seen in my 30 Rock “Me Want Food” tee shirt. It was just this year that I gave our dad a Game of Thrones tee shirt for Father’s Day.

There’s definitely a lot of good TV gifts that you can give. And no matter what Keith says, I’m not sure a sling box is at the top of the list!
