Grimm – Getting a little deeper

Danse Macbre

Nice tunes, interesting launch, horrifying death, very cool looking rat people (Reinigen) … but that was all I was left with in this episode of Grimm.

There was little to chew on (*heheh*) and not much substance. The premise was an interesting riff on The Pied Piper of Hamelin, but somewhat convoluted in the telling … and for no real apparent reason.

Notes:

• Loved the fact Camille Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre was the piece the students were practicing at the beginning of the show. Nice touch. Per the piece, the story is Death calls forth the dead to dance while playing fiddle. Macabre, indeed.
• Of interest was the fact the autopsy performed on Dr. Larson revealed he died of a heart attack brought on by the shock of discovering the rats in his car, not by being eaten by the little devils themselves.

Three Bad Wolves

Whoa! Talk about jumping into the mix and getting a nice dose of mythology tossed in for good measure! On the flip side of Danse Macabre, we got this little gem from Grimm to balance the scales.

Referencing The Three Little Pigs, this airing twisted the hell out of the tale and turned the tables on the entire relationship between the little piggies (Daniel Roebuck‘s Lt. Orson) and the big, bad wolf (Hap, Angelina and their brother). Plus, we were treated to a little bit of Monroe’s Blutbad back story, too. He may state to Nick his love for Angelina (Jaime Ray Newman) is gone, daddy, gone, but his eyes reveal something very different. (I’d love to see more of Ms. Newman in the future. *Woof!* Er … I mean, please.)

Notes:

• Did anyone get the correlation of the shake weight Hap was messing with (and ultimately tossed out the window, inadvertently — and temporarily — saving his life) in context with the story? For me, it was the fragile relationship between Blutbad and Bauerschwein.
• We never did see the third wolf in the story, Hap and Angelina’s brother who died previous to Hap’s house going blooey. Was their brother as “hapless” as Hap? Or a fiery piece of work akin to Angelina? I’m just curious.
• I’m a little confused on how the creatures recognize Nick as a Grimm. Some see it automatically in him … but did you notice Hap didn’t have a clue? (Perhaps that was a result of his luckless, sad sackish demeanor.)
• Monroe had a pretty hot thing with Angelina, didn’t he? The type where it appears he wouldn’t mind heading back into that relationship … if not for all the downside of all the Blutbad “economics” that go with such a return.
• We really got a nice glimpse of the histories and books in Aunt Marie’s trailer this time around, didn’t we?
