For 59 minutes, this week’s Hawaii Five-0 was good, solid, no-BS fun — and then we came to that last scene. To steal a line from Richard Belzer, not only did the show rain on my parade, it blew up all the floats.
Joe White (Terry O’Quinn), Steve’s mentor and close friend, was seen calling an unidentified person, telling them that Steve’s “getting too close.”
Then I was seen rolling my eyes.
Before I get into the reasons why, let me be fair and say that as we don’t know what the writers are planning, there’s the possibility that this disastrous clip might not turn out to be what it looks like.
Yet as fans and critics, we can only evaluate what’s in front of our faces on any given week. And what it looks like is that Joe is another mole in the Five-0 team.
I am not in love with this idea. In general, I’ve tired of the tendency – not just in television but often in film as well – that there needs to be some sort of last-second surprise, which usually takes the form of a good guy going bad. This has become fairly common practice, which makes me wonder how much of a surprise any of these twist endings are when you can pretty much expect them.
When it comes to this show, I dislike it more because it’s ground that we’ve already treaded this season, with Jenna Kaye. One mole is one thing, but two? That’s a bit ridiculous. (Even I started laughing at how 24 found at least one mole in CTU every season.)
Jenna’s defection was decently successful, because we never warmed to her as a heroine, so we were more inclined to believe that she would turn sides. (And her last episode was pretty great, too.) But do we need to tear down Joe’s character in this way? To rob Steve of his mentor, close friend, and one of his rare confidantes outside of the team – perhaps one of the most dear people in his life? Let’s not forget that last season already saw one of his old friends try and kill him.
This feels to me like another play to make this show bigger and better, when it doesn’t need anything at all. As the saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
I want to hold out hope that I’ll be wrong about all this by the end of the season. I’m just not sure how accurate that would be. Joe has been around so often this season that he’s practically a regular; all that screen time would be explained if the writers were just building up his relationship with and importance to Steve before pulling the betrayal card for maximum effect.
Yet this is the guy who saved Steve’s life last week, and who lost his lengthy Naval career this week because of that. He’s loyal enough to risk that, but not loyal enough to stick by his protege? It doesn’t quite sit right with me.
I’ll wait and see what happens. But I hope the Five-0 writers have a very good explanation for throwing in this latest wrench.
I didn’t get to the end of the episode (I fell asleep, as often times happens when I’m watching Hawaii 5-0, but I don’t know how this “twist” could begin to be a surprise. Firstly, Wo Fat referenced Joe several times when he was interrogating Steve last week. We had to know that Joe was more deeply connected to the mystery. Also, it’s not exactly the first time that Joe has kept something from Steve.
And, as you’ve said, Hawaii 5-0 has already tread this ground once before.
Sometimes this show is a walking talking cliche … And I have no clue why I stick around.

I forgot that part. I figured there was something else going on with Joe, but I was thinking he’d die some tragic death for dramatic effect.
Aw admit it Dorv…it’s because you don’t want to miss the greatest actress…
Maybe I should have put more emphasis on the “feel asleep” part :P
I did not think that Joe was betraying Steve. I think that he knows more and that he is keeping things from Steve, but it is to protect him and his family. Possibly that Steve’s father is alive, or even his mother after all this time. One of them may even be Shelburne and he has been protecting them all this time. I think you just need to be a little more patient. I think we will get some answers in the January episodes. Meanwhile I am looking forward to Chin and Malia’s wedding next week. I hope they do not do anything to either of them. One team member should have a happy home life.
Also, still not impressed with the Lori character. Just taking up screen time from the original 4.
I keep thinking that Steve’s dad is going to turn up alive too. But now that you mention it it could be that mom is alive and Joe knows it.
Not feeling anything positive about Lori either. I keep telling myself that as long as she is not a fixture in the opening credits there is hope that she will not be around for long.
Ivey clearly Joe is not connected with Wo Fat because Wo Fat tried to kill him. Zia is right. All signs of the season point to the fact that Joe is trying to hold back Steve to protect him and possibly others in his life. He knows more about what is going on but not in an evil secretive way but in a protector way. It will go down like this; Steve will become suspicious of Joe, steve will pull away and begin to cut Joe out, there will be a full confrontation due to some misunderstanding and even possibly a physical fight between the two then Joe will reveal his secret and all will be well, they will make up and move forward together to uncover the deeper truth and resolve the storyline.
Chris: Not connected to Wo Fat in the “he works for him” sense, but more in the he’s connected to whatever it is that Wo Fat is looking for, as Wo Fat asked Steve what Joe knew about it.
@Ivey…Joe also asked Wofat about Shelburne, when Wofat broke into his apartment. Steve’s father also asked Wofat about Shelburne in the hidden tape that Kensi read the lips of. Probably both wanting to see Wofat’s reaction. Then Wofat asked Steve about Shelburne and Steve said “you don’t know do you”. Someone knows about Shelburne, my bet is it is Joe.

Chris, that’s an interesting idea and certainly a more palatable one, but this also wouldn’t be the first time a show came up with something it thought was awesome even if it disregarded prior canon. I don’t think you can discount either theory until we see a bit more of what’s going on.

I think patience is easier preached than practiced with a cliffhanger ending like this. It’s basically inviting us to make speculation. As stated above, I’m only judging based on what’s currently in front of me, so I could very well be wrong (in fact, for the reasons outlined above, I hope I’m wrong). But I don’t blame fans for having a reaction to the last scene…that’s what the show wants.
no more moles pleez
“To steal a line from Richard Belzer, not only did the show rain on my parade, it blew up all the floats.” Love that line!
No more molez pleez…. Don’t like the sound of that last scene.
What if Shelbuorne is not a what but is a who?
