Ratings Clack – Thanksgiving takes its toll

The holiday week didn't do any favors for the networks where ratings are concerned. Turkey day found plenty of shows ending up on the wrong side of the up/down scale, and NBC finishing in fifth place, three times.

ABC - Things started well enough, with the American Music Awards (12.07m/4.3) on pace with last year’s effort. They started to go downhill after that. Dancing With The Stars (19.61m/3.5 – 19.56m/4.1) checked in with its lowest rated fall finale ever. Of course, that’s still a 4.1 in the demo. So… I’m sure ABC is keen to keep ordering up more seasons for the foreseeable future. Castle (10.85m/2.3) was off the pace as well, and we now wait patiently to see how the show will hold up without the DWTS cushion.

The Wednesday lineup of The Middle (9.09m/2.5), Suburgatory (8.32m/2.5), Modern Family (12.65m/4.5), Happy Endings (7.22m/2.7), and Revenge (7.24m/2.1) was also down across the board. However, that was still good enough to easily win the night for the network. Breaking the trend, the big winners were Last Man Standing (9.29m/2.7) and Man Up (6.66m/1.9). Both were up in viewers and demo for the week.

CBS - The short week was kicked off with the normal Sunday trio of Amazing Race (10.24m/2.8), The Good Wife (9.79m/1.9), and CSI Miami (9.55m/1.9) taking a bit of a hit from a football delay. Monday, while down overall, still looked great with How I Met Your Mother (10.01m/4.4), 2 Broke Girls (11.33m/4.6), Two And A Half Men (15.82m/5.2), Mike & Molly (13.05m/4.2), and Hawaii Five-O (10.59m/2.8). The news was similar Tuesday where NCIS (18.5m/3.5), NCIS LA (14.1m/3), and Unforgettable (10.42m/2.2) all stumbled. Again, as with DWTS, a stumbling NCIS is still cause for celebration.

FOX - The network had their own holiday issues as X Factor (9.43m/3.2 – 8.51m/2.5) also found new series lows. That Wednesday number is particularly interesting. Did anyone think before the season that X Factor would be finishing second to The Middle and Suburgatory? Elsewhere, Terra Nova (6.5m/2.1) and House (7.46m/2.5) continued to struggle on Monday, while Mobbed (4.7m/1.6) is looking more and more like a one time failed experiment. Earlier in the week, The Simpsons (5.77m/2.7), Allen Gregory (3.94m/1.9), Family Guy (6.02m/3.2), and American Dad (4.82m/2.4) turned in a rather uneventful Sunday to start the week.

NBC - As has become the norm, it was a great week for Sunday Night Football (20.31m/7.6), and not much else. The Sing Off (4.27m/1.4), Rock Center (3.87m/1.1), Biggest Loser (5.58m/2 – 3.69m/1.2), Parenthood (4.57m/1.9), and Up All Night (4.33m/1.5) were all completely out of the running. So much so that NBC managed to finish in fifth place in the demo three times, behind Univision.

CW - There were only three entries in the CW holiday schedule – Gossip Girl (1.35m/.7), Hart Of Dixie (1.77m/.7), and 90210 (1.26m/.6).

ABC really should have two full nights of comedies, they have a lot of good ones. They could pick up Community and stick it with Cougar Town.
