Supernatural pays a bit of homage to Pulp Fiction

I'll say one thing about those pesky doppelgangering leviathans: they sure are hungry. A lot. And not for Royales with cheese.

- Season 7, Episode 6 - "Slash Fiction"

“If you’re gonna be stupid, you might as well be smart about it.” – Bobby

The first thing I need to start off with is this incredibly awesome bit of dialog between the Sam and Dean doppelgangers/leviathans that was followed by an awesome homage to Pulp Fiction:

“You know that he has one of these [holds up hamburger] … every day. And in his heart, he thinks they’re almost as good as sex. This … is disgusting.” – Doppelganger Dean
“Dead plants with creamy goo. [Points out plate of salad] It’s like … eating self-righteousness. I mean, you tell me which is worse.” – Doppelganger Sam
“I mean honestly, I just … I … You know what? I can’t stand the guy. Talk about a hero complex. And he doesn’t have relationships — no, he has applications for sainthood. Oh, and he thinks he’s funny. Thinks he’s a damn comedian.” – DD
“Who has two thumbs and full-blown bats in the belfry? [Throws both thumbs at himself] I’m serious, it’s nothing but Satan-vision on the inside. I mean, how he’s walking around in a jacket with detachable arms is … beyond me. Y’know I had a brother with this many issues once.” – DS
“Yeah?” – DD
“Know what I did?” – DS
“Hm?” – DD
“I ate him.” – DS
“Of course you did.” – DD
“How are these guys even a threat?” – DS
“Boss says they gotta go, they gotta go.” – DD
“Right. … Idea. wanna trade? I mean I’ll take Chuckles over Skitzo.” – DS
“Nah I like this one’s hair better. You can stay in the big one.” – DD
“All right. In that case, let’s turn up the heat.” – DS

Come on — how awesome was that? That scene was only outdone by one that will go down in history as one of the best of the series, when Dean couldn’t help himself from lip-syncing Air Supply’s “All Out Of Love.” Deb and I were laughing through that and the following scene!

The rest of the episode was fantastic as well, including a surprise guest spot for BSG‘s Michael Hogan. It’s always great to see Hogan in a role, but it saddens me he’s only playing small parts like this. But, hey, you can’t ask for a better show for him to show up in, right?

The revelation to Sam that Dean killed Amy wasn’t a surprise, once we knew the leviathans would have Sam’s and Dean’s memories. It was just a matter of when doppelganger Dean would let lose on Sam. It surprised me a bit that Sam so easily believed the leviathan, but at least that old story is out of the bag. I was also surprised Dean brushed it off so easily, seeing as he was just having sweaty nightmares about it last week. Yet another surprise: Sam and Dean are apparently working together already next week. Well that’s one drawn-out storyline that ended quickly.

I’m interested in seeing what becomes of Crowley’s meeting with the leviathan boss. Was that scene there merely to let us know that the two groups won’t be working together? Or was it the beginning of the end of one of them? What would Crowley gain from doing away with the leviathans? I believe there’s a lot more to that meeting than just seeing that the two don’t get along, and the more Crowley we get, the better.

Loved the conversation in the diner. Trivia: one of the patrons killed in the diner was played by author S.E. Hinton (The Outsiders).

There were some really great lines throughout this episode, and a great new character in Frank. And, the “Air Supply” scene is priceless.

My favorite episode this season! I’m predicting another uneasy alliance between Crowley and the Winchesters. Since the levi boss clearly outlined their hatred for demons, I’m sure they are killing them as well.
