American Horror Story – Welcome to Murder House

We found out last week that the Harmons' home was being called "Murder House," and now we have yet more reasons why that's an appropriate name for it. Plus, we get some sort of reasoning why the Harmons aren't moving out anytime soon.

- Season 1, Episode 3 - "Murder House"

It’s all about Constance. Constance, Constance. She seems to be keeping at least the maid hostage somehow, and it’s completely unclear as to how she’s doing it. Is she a ghost as well? Is she some sort of witch with a spell that’s able to control the unrestful spirits still resident in that home? With the maid, she clearly has reason to want to cause her a life (death?) of hell, for her having cheated with her husband … or was that her husband?

I ask if that was her husband for a couple of reasons. First of all, the opening scene was from within the Harmons’ house, where Constance killed both the maid and, presumably, her husband. Did Constance once live at that house and then move? And how could she have possibly gotten away with murder? Did she spend time in jail, or did she get away with it? The other issue at hand is the date of those murders: 1983. So, unless Constance later remarried, how could she have such a young daughter?

It was interesting to see that other men see the maid as the dead, hot one, not just Ben. I get the feeling that we’ll likely never know why these souls are so … potent. How can simply ghosts appear to so many people, so clearly?

One thing that was bugging me even before this series began was what would possibly keep the Harmons in that house of hell for an entire season, never mind more than one season? Now we know: bad investments. Obviously the Harmons make all sorts of piss-poor decisions — the house being a whopper of one — so being awful with their money isn’t a surprise. I guess there’s still a decent amount of belief suspension about why they wouldn’t get out no matter what, given what nightmares have been going on … and they’ll likely get worse.

How long now before Haden is haunting the Murder House? Will she come to tell Vivien the truth somehow? And why does her murder mean that the maid is now stuck on this plane of existence forever, according to Constance? Is it because the Mongomerys’ baby’s body is down there with her? What he hell is Larry Harvey’s (the burned man) story? (Side note: Did you know there’s a Larry Harvey who helps organize Burning Man? Now that’s a weird coincidence … or is it?

Damn, this is one bizarre show. I like it, but then I wonder if it’ll lose its allure if all we’re given is one confusing thing after another. By the way, at the very end of the episode, the song plays something backwards — it’s just saying “I saw you leave,” from the song’s lyrics, in case you were wondering.

This show is so terrifically freaky! I had to call my sister afterwards to discuss “What the hell?” And she pointed out to me, that the Burnt Man dug up the maids’ corpse at the end. When she was crying at the window, and he held up the cloth? It was an apron! Hers. So we think Constance buried her there and that’s why she’s stuck there. Plus Constance obviously has some weird hold over the dead.
She is one scary broad. And Jessica Lange is gonna get nominated for an Emmy because of it, I’ll bet. She’s amazingly good.

Hm … I thought what the burned man held up was that baby’s clothes, and then there was a tiny baby skull in the hole. I’ll have to look again.

it was definitly the maid. i just watched it twice in a row. When the camera shows the whole body again you see the black parts of the maid’s outfit too. He puts his hat down because he’s simply paying respect to the body that was already there.

the maid is poisoning his coffee and putting in on top of her grave with a shovel in hopes that he’ll dig her up so she can leave. But when there’s a second body in there and cement over it, she knows it will never be found. That’s why she’s crying so much at the end.

Burnt Man was caught, and he lit his family on fire. There wouldn’t be any reason to bury them – especially not just one in a single hole.

hm — I saw the maid too, with Larry pulling up her apron and looking at it. This makes sense given the whole “looks like you’re stuck here” conversation with her and Constance.
