This weekend I managed to go to New York Comic Con, which took place October 11-14 at the Javits Center. NYCC featured a whirlwind of press, panels, and cosplay. I know some people call NYCC, SDCC’s lesser sister but I don’t see it as that. In fact, quite the contrary. If you’re on the east coast and want to visit a large con featuring panels with your favorite media personalities, NYCC is the way to go. Hey, for the cost of a bus ride you can meet Eliza Dushku or dress up as Conan the Barbarian while meeting Jason Momoa (Conan the Barbarian). So why not?
Interviews and Panels
I managed to snag a one-on-one interview with Emily Rose from Haven; interviews with Maggie Q, Shane West, and Albert Kim of Nikita; an interview with Bruce Timm of Green Lantern: The Animated Series; a sneak peek at Green Lantern: The Animated Series; attend both the Nikita and Green Lantern panels as well as grab advanced information about the Catwoman cartoon. Look for those posts later in the week.
But, as a preview, Green Lantern the cartoon looked awesome. The 3D looked like a stylized 2D in Timm’s style. In the panel, Timm admitted he wished the movie had done better as a lead-in. However, despite similarities between the film and cartoon, he said they didn’t coordinate too much. When I asked Bruce Timm his thoughts on the DC reboot, he studiously avoided and said he had no opinion either way. The Nikita panel was packed. In the panel and press room, Maggie, Shane and Albert all dropped Nikita spoilers and intimated an “adult” wedge might happen between our power couple. Plus, Maggie and Shane had great on-stage chemistry. Emily Rose confirmed the holiday episode would serve as a love letter to the fans, but it wouldn’t impact the show itself.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t sit in on the Walking Dead or Avengers panels because the IGN theater filled to capacity at around 4:30. So, if you were in another panel or interviewing someone, you were SOL. Don’t worry, if you google it, I’m sure you’ll come across the sneak peeks. However, the CC gang picked up a ton of interviews at SDCC with the Walking Dead and more.
The Artists
All the same, I got to meet some interesting people like the artists with projects such as Battlemasterz. I’m a straight up comic book lover from back in the day. But, as you might guess from my past Wonder Woman or Playboy Club pieces, I’m not a fan of the sexualized female form (clothed or unclothed). So, I stopped and talked to one of the artists who heavily featured the female body to learn more about his project. He was incredibly open and colloquial. From his perspective, his art which featured numerous naked women (and made me a might squeamish) was more about respecting the female form. Konscious! Creations, his project, surrounded an “urban, hip hop” vibe which he felt Batman and Superman partially lacked. And, his images focused on “building up the community” through “man and woman,” “woman and child,” as well as providing graphic novels, like Birth of a Legend,which kids could see themselves in.
I don’t know if the Wonder Woman artists had community in mind with Wondy’s breasts, but … you never know. So, the next time you visit NYCC (or any con), stop and talk to the artists when you’re in their alley and support them, especially the independent creators.
Overall, New York Comic Con was a fun whirlwind with a huge exhibition floor (The Avengers exhibit was surrounded by a large crowd). But, watch your wallet. I paid around 9.67 for water, a muffin and a cup of coffee; absolutely forgetting the McDonald’s around the corner; so, pack a lunch. Despite that, if you’re on the east coast and want a slightly larger con experience, why wouldn’t you do the comic con trek? You meet interesting people like the 23-year-old jailbait who asked me out or the family of Deadpool assassins I saw circling the floor. So, go to your local cons and the big ones. You’ll thank me for it. Oh, and, Peter Parker? Thanks for the ego boost.
