I love Anna Faris and Halloween, so I was really looking forward to this week’s episode. Except, the laughs were few and far between and Halloween barely got more than a passing mention, even though it was referred to as the Halloween episode in the monologue. Not even a Vincent Price Halloween Special sketch! But there were a few laughs here and there, and quite a few songs (and if I transcribed all the lyrics the post would get published next Saturday night), so check back first thing Sunday for the embedded video clips as we get them.
Cold Open: Michael Bloomberg Message — Bloomberg makes a case for power washing and New York being the leader in all things, including Wall Street protests. Just don’t light a cigarette. This was pretty funny overall.
Monologue: Anna Faris — Anna takes questions from the audience and meets her doppelganger Hana Garis.
The Manuel Ortiz Show — Another episode of the bizarre Dominican talk show where everyone dances onto the set. The funniest bit was the network censor deciding “Tickle his tiny coconuts” is preferable to “touch his tomatilloes.” I think we saw this bit finally run out of gas as the sketch ends with a fire drill.
What’s Wrong With Tanya? — A Lifetime original game show where mother’s from Lifetime movies try to guess what’s wrong with “Tanya.” Lightning round: say “yes” or scream “no.” Nice bit of poking fun at those Lifetime “women’s movies,” but could have been a lot funnier.
SNL Digital Short — A series of differently styled interviews with Drake, from “brief” to “sarcastic” and extremely funny! Really the funniest piece of the night … and the only mention of Halloween in a sketch!
Marriott TV: Yet Another GOP Debate — A GOP debate on Marriott closed circuit television. Humorous intro setting up the moving of candidates so that anyone could win, including putting Bachmann and Gingrich in a janitor’s closet, Ron Paul in an empty garage and Santorum in a San Francisco gay bar. We learn Cain’s 9-9-9 plan was just a ploy to get a show on Fox News … at 9. Romney’s new slogan: “Yes We Can … Live With That.” A pretty funny piece.
Musical Guest: Drake — I don’t really care for the music, but the video wall set was really cool. Nicki Minaj joined Drake for the second song, and not even she was dressed for Halloween.
Weekend Update — Top stories: Romney under attack, GOP debate (boring poker game or séance?), new TSA security program, a costumed vigilante. Second Hand News with Anthony Crispino — Occupy Walgreen’s, it’s true, it’s full of Protestants. Drake and Jay Pharao discuss Halloween trends as teenagers dressed as werewolves, and they perform “We’re Bag-jackin’, Bitches.”
Boy Drama — A group of girls gives a friend dating advice set to the tune of “Tell Him” — and it takes a lot of deception to fall in love.
J Pop America Funtime Now — College access show celebrating Japanese culture, fashion and music, and riding a fine line between homage and racism. Totally politically incorrect, but poking fun at American stereotypes of Japanese stereotypes was pretty darned funny-deh-deh.
New Boyfriend — Anna’s new boyfriend Cecil is a handful. Bizarre, but funny and it didn’t go on for longer than it needed.
Calendar Girls — Two Jersey girls (?) are in desperate need of a Ferrari calendar to fantasize about the guys next to the cars. The descriptions of the models they gave were bizarre and the punchline to the sketch was ever weirder.
Didn’t Keith used to do these?
Yeah, I was getting burned out and needed a break from it. I still add the videos the next morning though! :)
Ah ok. I just miss your commentary. This is just a small recap of what the sketch was & a little note afterwards. No offense to Chuck, but the review isn’t the same.
The J-Pop bit was the best. I was laughing so hard-du-ru ;-D
