Secret Circle – Things just got a little crazy

Big changes on this week's 'Secret Circle.' How will the events of this episode impact the story going forward?

- Season 1, Episode 5 - "Slither"

It seems like it was just yesterday that I was theorizing that the six members of The Secret Circle would be safe, despite Kevin Williamson’s tendency to kill off his characters. Until the final montage of everyone dealing with Nick’s death, I didn’t think it was going to stick. It could have been a last second bit of magic that no one saw coming, but I expected Nick to be breathing by the end credits. I’m not sure where things go from here – how will Nick’s death affect the power of the circle?

It will obviously have an impact on the people of Chance Harbor beyond the mystical implications. The part of the montage where Faye was consoling Melissa was heartbreaking. I had a lot of hope for where their relationship was going … both characters a little broken, but slowly finding themselves in each other. I am sure it will take both Dawn and Charles some time to get past their well-deserved guilt as well. I actually thought that they would be caught standing over Nick’s body, but that was when I still thought he had a fighting chance. That would mean that just about every secret we have seen so far would be laid bare in one hour … I think we’ve had enough change for one episode, no?

I’m glad that The Secret Circle has finally remembered that Jane Blake exists. If she has been in the previous couple of episodes, it has only been for fleeting moments, with no substantial participation in the story. Now that Cassie has admitted that she knows she is a witch, I expect Jane will play a much larger role in the story moving forward. I was disappointed that she knew so little (or claimed to know so little) about the night of the fire. I guess it will take some time for that particular story to come to light.

As much as I love Ashley Crow, I still can’t get past one bit of television idiosyncrasy. It was just a couple of TV seasons ago that she was playing the mother of a 16-year-old on Heroes — a daughter, I might add, who was spending a little time with a character played by Thomas Dekker. Now she’s playing the grandmother of a 16-year-old girl who is also spending time with a character played by Thomas Dekker.

Something about that math just doesn’t work.
