Modern Family – The new Turner and Hooch

Seriously. I would watch a movie about the madcap misadventures of Jay and Stella. Gloria can make a cameo if she wants to, but there's only room for one lady at the top.

- Season 3, Episode 2 - "Phil on Wire"

As much as I love and miss Arrested Development, Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls and all of the other dearly departed shows that we constantly hear movie rumors about, I would totally be cool with waiting a few more years for any of them if it meant we could get a Turner & Hooch remake with Jay and Stella. Let’s face it: Turner & Hooch is a movie classic that’s just begging to be remade, and Jay and Stella have onscreen chemistry that dare I say surpasses that of Tom Hanks and his… Hooch.

I love that Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet have won Emmys, but Ed O’Neil‘s dry delivery kills me. Everything that comes out of his mouth makes me laugh harder than just about anything else on the show. “I’m sorry you had to see this.”

I’m sorry I had to see the whole ridiculous storyline with Claire, Alex and Haley. It was ridiculous, but not in a funny, “Mitch and Cam in the ocean” kind of way. It was ridiculous in a “this just doesn’t make any damn sense” kind of way. By this point, Haley should be good enough at cheating to know that copying homework answers from her brilliant sister is obviously going to get her caught. Plus, the whole fake cop putting a mother in ziptie cuffs? Come on. The chances of something like that happening without the ACLU getting involved? I would say they’re practically nonexistent.

Speaking of Mitch and Cam though, there are few things funnier in this world that food deprivation-induced delirium. I loved all of Cam’s stages of his diet; especially ripping the cabinet door off. Mitch and Cam make such a great comedic couple that it was really Cam’s hilarity through the first part of the episode that made Mitch’s ugly cry that much more funny. Jesse Tyler Ferguson knocked that scene out of the park. I would love to know how many takes he did before that insane amount of drool came out of his mouth. My god, it was legendary. The way Ferguson and Stonestreet play off of each other gets funnier and funnier every season. I can’t wait to see what else they have in store for us this season.

Jay and Stella are pretty awesome, but my favorite pair in this episode was Phil and Luke. Those two are just so “special” – I hesitate to call them dumb because they’re not really dumb. Maybe the right word is innocent (in the more archaic sense, i.e., simple, naive). That scene where Luke confesses that he ate all the junk food was adorable. They are such kindred spirits. I can’t get enough of them! But, yeah, Jay and Stella are nearly as awesome. ;-)
