“I was wrong.” – Damon
“Are you drunk?” – Elena
I know, I know; it’s wrong in every way for me to feel sympathy for Klaus that his hybrid army didn’t work out, what with all the eye bleeding and all. But he was just so pathetic when he whimpered to Stefan that he was all he had left. That little pout, those cheekbones, the accent … could he really be all that bad? Well, I’m not sure he has dimples, so that’s a strike against him.
Seriously, though, I love the reason that Klaus’s army failed: because he failed to kill the doppelganger. Oh, it’s going to be fun when he figures that out.
I’m really glad to see that the moms aren’t one-note characters, the evil ones who never believe their kids or stick up for them. Finally, at the end of last season, Caroline was able to make her mom see that she was still Caroline. Tonight, it was really telling that Mrs. Lockwood underwent a transformation as she watched Tyler go through his (like what I did there?). I wouldn’t have guessed that she didn’t know about the Lockwood family curse, nor would I have guessed that she was savvy enough to test Tyler with the vervain coffee. Her character is fleshing out in a good way.
Now a disappointment — did anyone else notice that Stefan and Damon’s interactions don’t hold the same intense power they did in the first two seasons? I thought it last episode and tonight confirmed it. I’m not sure why that is. When they interact, I want to feel how torn Damon is, how he knows Stefan is in this mess because of him, but he really doesn’t want Stefan back because he’s got Elena all to himself … but I don’t. I’m not feeling it; the love/hate relationship in all its complexity just fell a bit flat.
Damon’s got his white hat on again, though, and his intensity did come through during his scene with Elena. He knows Stefan is still in there because he saved Damon’s life, yet again. But the best part was that he got Elena to admit that she cares about him and that she is feeling something.
All in all, I’m starting to feel season three. Disappointment started creeping in tonight when the beginning of the episode dragged a little, and then I remembered my pattern with most of the episodes over the last two years, and sure enough, by the end of the episode, I was gasping for air.
This and that:
Could this season be starting any better?! I am so pleased. For any of you Vampire TV addicts who also watch True Blood, you’ll agree we needed this! In your face HBO. VD has done more in two episodes than you did all season with more compelling dialogue, intriguing storylines, and threats of danger. Perfect balance with Damon and Elena. I said it all last year and I’ll say it again. Damon’s best scenes are with Elena. Chemistry man. Damon and Stephan will get it back – their chemistry that is. Oh, and I have to comment – what the heck does Steve M do over the summer? Jeremy you came back even hotter this season!
I honestly don’t think that Tyler’s father knew about the curse. Mason didn’t seem to know until the first time he changed. Let’s face it IRL most people don’t kill anyone, so it easily could have been generations since anyone in the family turned and the curse may have been forgotten.
On another note, poor Caroline has the worst luck in parents. Both her parents saw her as a monster when they found out about her being a vampire. Her mom came around, but now her dad is where her mom was. I want Caroline saved. I really hope she saves herself. If not, Tyler can save her.
I don’t know, I’m going to have to be the odd ball and complain a bit about the whole ‘let’s save Stefan’ plot line. It just seems like we’ve been here before thus we know where we’re headed.
Elena: “Oh, no, we have to save Stefan!”
Damon: “No, I’ve seen this before there’s no hope, just forget it.”
Elena: “No, he’s not really like this, we have to save him.”
Damon: “Okay, let’s save him.”
Stefan: “No, I’m a terrible person and don’t deserve to be saved.”
Elena: “Yes you do.”
Stefan: “No I don’t. Just go away.”
Elena: “But I love you. Love will save the day.”
Stefan: “Oh, okay then, I’m better now.”
Lather, rinse, repeat…
There has been a version of this every season now, and I just think that it may be nice to see someone else in emotional peril. I was honestly hoping they would turn Elena last season so that we could see her go a little nuts and need some saving. (Emotional saving that is, she’s had more physical saving than any one person needs.) They might be going for an Angel/Angelus thing, but it’s just not reading the same way to me.
