Since Bob has deemed my TV watching akin to that of a ‘tween, I thought it only fitting that I check out, albeit late, The Nine Lives of Chloe King. There are some shows that are worth waiting to watch until you hear the buzz, you know? Anyway, I’m four episodes in and enjoying it, but I can’t help think of all the other shows it reminds me of. Don’t get me wrong; I do think it stands on its own as original entertainment. However, some of the parallels to Buffy, Kyle XY and Teen Wolf can’t be missed.
We bantered a bit about this at the CliqueClack offices:
IVEY: I don’t watch Teen Wolf, but the allusions to Buffy, unintentional or otherwise, put me off enough that I actually gave up after a couple of episodes.
DEBBIE: I disagree so far (only four episodes in). While I definitely see some things that remind me of Buffy, I don’t think it is in any way a knock-off or unoriginal. While Brian is clearly Riley and Alec Angel (though once I got a little farther on in episodes, I was thinking Duncan Kane / Logan Echolls), there’s not a whole lot beyond that screaming “Buffy Clone” at me. You think Valentina is like Giles? I don’t. And she’s being trained by peers, not a father figure, a very different feel to it.
If I had to choose, it feels a lot more like Kyle XY‘s Scooby Gang than Buffy‘s, and the (SPOILER ALERT) twist that Brian’s dad is in charge of eliminating Chloe reeks of Teen Wolf’s Argent clan.
CARLA: I think there are a few similarities to Buffy … the big one that her mother is in the dark about her new powers. But, that is a fairly common theme in stories like this and I think it adds to the story. Especially given the twist (SPOILER ALERT) that she may know more than she lets on (secret box).
But, there is the whole father thing that is nothing like Buffy. Also, the nine lives adds an intriguing and unique aspect to the series.
Since this and Teen Wolf premiered at the same time, I have a hard time saying it is similar. They both have “hunters” but for very different reasons and Teen Wolf‘s “hunters” are motivated by good while that doesn’t seem to be the case on Nine Lives at all.
DEBBIE: Yet is seems we’ll never find out now, since ABC Family has canceled The Nine Lives of Chloe King. I can’t be the only person that finale cliffhanger is going to eat away at, right?

O wow, this is horrible news, I thought 9 lives was one of the more entertaining series of the summer and I don’t usually watch teen-oriented stuff.
On the other hand, now in my little inner fantasy world Brian is dead, Alek kills his brother and he and Chloe stay together forever united by their common angst at ending someones life! (My fantasy world is a bit dark I guess)

ABCFamily lost a viewer, and probably many more. I hate saying it, but I truly hope that ABCFamily is hurt in ratings by the deicision they have made. On the other hand, Skyler Samuels as well as Amy Pietz are far too talented and excellent actors to spend their time on ABCFamily, they can now move on to bigger and better things, and I for one will be excited to see their next projects. But I do have to admit, I will miss the mother/daughter chemistry that these two actresses had on screen, it was unmatched by anything any other show on ABCFamily had to offer.
Very sad….
