One of the main themes that has been threaded throughout each of the first three seasons of Sons of Anarchy is Jax’s ambivalence about his lifestyle. He was raised in SAMCRO; destined to lead the club like his father did, but unlike most of his compatriots, harbors distant dreams of leading a different life. The problem is, Jax realizes that he has a very specialized skill set; one that doesn’t translate very well to legitimate work.
As he says, he’s an “okay mechanic with a GED,” which does provide some options, but he’s also an okay mechanic with a GED who has scars from where he was shivved in prison. The point is, Jax Teller’s future as a legitimate member of society is looking a little dim. But he’s got to try; after all, it’s a chance. A chance to lead a better life is at least preferable to continuing down his current path which he knows can only lead to prison or death.
All of this soul searching, however, doesn’t mean that Jax is a changed man: if anything, prison has made the club more ruthless; they waste no time after being released and immediately set a plan in motion to regain their share of the Irish gun running business. Opie’s wedding on a reservation (where the new Sheriff’s office can’t touch them) provided not only an impressive and vast array of criminals, non-traditional wedding attire and raunchy vows, but also a backdrop for some good old-fashioned brutal murders.
SAMCRO, as we’ve already seen on a few occasions, isn’t afraid to kill a federal agent if they feel they have no other choice. In this episode, they killed an FBI agent, but without realizing it. It’s one thing to kill a federal agent if you have a plan in place, but to kill one completely by accident? It’s probably safe to say that this won’t be an action without its own set of repercussions.
Now that Hale and Stahl are dead and the Charming PD has been disbanded, SAMCRO has a whole new opponent in a Peter Fonda-looking paranoid AUSA. Stahl had this amazing ability to make me want to punch her in the face every time she was on screen, which made her an excellent villain. This guy looks ridiculously annoying as well, but I’m not sure if he’s going to incite the same blind rage that Stahl did.
The letters that Maureen gave to Jax last season that he hasn’t seen are clearly going to come into play. Tara has been reading them pretty often over the past year, it seems. I doubt she’d be this interested in old love letters. We already know that John knew that Gemma and Clay were together, but more interestingly, he seemed to believe that they were going to kill him. Now, yes, he did happen to end up dead not too long after writing this, but it could have been a coincidence, right? Okay, probably not. So here’s the question: did Gemma and Clay kill John? Did Clay do it on his own? Either way, I’m sure the answer is going to play a role in whether or not Jax makes it out of Charming.
Are you (or anyone else) going to be recapping this season? The reason I ask is this post isn’t listed in the episode clack column. I hope so, this is one of my favorite shows, and last night’s ep was awesome.
