Wilfred at Comic-Con

Despite the fact I was in the pressroom for 'Wilfred' during The Con, I got nary an interview. But an unexpected turn of events (facilitated by Nature) got me face time with Jason Gann, anyway.

- Season 1, Episode 6 - "Conscience"

“Conscience is the dog that can’t bite, but never stops barking.” — Proverb

One of the first pressrooms I attended at Comic-Con last week was the one for Wilfred. I was a bit surprised at how busy and frantic the room was — quite a few representatives on hand to pump stars’ flesh and talk them blue.

So many, in fact, I wasn’t able to get a single interview before they headed for their scheduled panel. Most of the actors’ time was spent with a microphone positioned at their lips while they stared in a camera.

But I did get the opportunity to check out their mannerisms and, to a degree, the cuts of their jibs. Elijah Wood (Ryan) is intelligent, engaging and has the most incredible piercing stare. (Incredibly thin, too.) Jason Gann (Wilfred) appeared a bit sheepish, but amiable and accommodating, a complete opposite from his character on the show. Fiona Gubelmann (Jenna) was cute as a bug’s ear and Dorian Brown (Kristin)? She’s just dreamy.

Two interesting things happened in that pressroom. The first witnessed was one press representative’s opening statement to Jason Gann when this person got face time with him: “I don’t know whether I should greet you as a human … or in traditional dog fashion.” There was an extremely uncomfortable moment where Jason didn’t know how to respond to the statement, but when the interviewer moved around him in an effort to sniff his ass, Jason didn’t have much choice but be a gentleman, turn tush toward the rep and let himself be “greeted” doggy style.

Wow. The whole exchange was unsettling. I was put off by the entire spectacle and Gann appeared not only confused by the rep’s actions but visibly abashed by them as well. How in the world do you conduct a legitimate Q&A after that … ?!? Let’s put it this way: I hold absolutely no respect for that particular rep any longer. Unreal.

The second interesting thing that happened was the sudden and unexpected appearance of Dominic Monaghan (Lost, Lord Of The Rings trilogy). Sweeping in the room, I overhead him call out a welcome greeting and head straight to Elijah. “Oh, shit!” was his response when he saw Dominic approaching. They hugged like long lost friends, talked for a few minutes, then Dominic let Elijah get back to his interviews. Nifty moment.

Which finally brings me to this week’s episode of Wilfred titled “Conscience.” It was a breath of fresh air where the series is concerned, not the usual crass vehicle Wilfred has become known for.

But fear not, lovers of the raunch: I saw next week’s offering during Wilfred panel … and it’s a doozy.

Side Note: Standing at the head of a short line in the men’s restroom at one point during Comic-Con, in walks none other than Jason Gann to avail himself of the facilities. No one recognized him but me in the packed room. He stood right beside me and mumbled under his breath at the “filled” room. I took the opportunity to introduce myself, stick my hand toward him and let him know I was in the pressroom the day before. I was able to glad hand him about the show, exchange a couple moments of pleasantries and then he headed out. Not exactly the ideal interview, but hey … you take what you can get when you can.
