Quibbling Siblings discuss our Emmy dreams

Every week brother and sister team Bob and Debbie take on a new topic. This week we talk about our Emmy dreams for this year.

Bob:

So, the Emmy nominations have been out for a while now. I’m sure you’ve checked them out. My question to you is this: who (or what) are you rooting for most this year?

As I look over the noms, there is one that stands out in my mind: I really, really want Elisabeth Moss to win best actress. She has been a huge part of what makes Mad Men great, and she definitely had her strongest season this past year. Watching Peggy grow and change through the run of the series from a naive secretary to an empowered, independent working woman has been incredibly fun and I would love to see Moss get some acknowledgment for that. I’m encouraged because the episode that she was nominated for (“The Suitcase’) was one of the best episodes the show has ever had and was an absolute showcase for both her and Jon Hamm (who were essentially the only two actors in the entire hour).

So, what’s your pick?

Debbie:

Oh, I don’t know … this happens every year, that two of my favorite shows’ actors are pitted against each other: Hugh Laurie for House and Michael C. Hall for Dexter. Neither of them have ever won, but both of them have been nominated a bunch of times (six for Laurie and five for Hall). It’s the year for one of them, I can feel it.

It’s been a really big year for both of them. On House, we got to see the amazing character growth that House experienced through his relationship with Cuddy. We talked about this a bit last week, but Laurie is somehow able to “Grinch” it — his heart has grown seven sizes but he’s still an ass, and Laurie’s grown as an actor because of what he’s asked to do with his character.

Over on Dexter, we watched the title character mourn the death of his wife, try to maintain a relationship with her children and finally make a connection with another human being who knows everything about him. Everything. Huge character growth there, too, and amazingly well-acted.

Asking me to choose would be like asking me if I love Keith or chocolate more … that would just be wrong.

Bob:

Who knows, maybe there can be a tie. Though, with Jon Hamm in the category, I don’t see it happening. That amazing episode I mentioned while talking about Elisabeth Moss? Jon Hamm was the other half of that equation and I have to say it may have been his best performance through the entire run of Mad Men. Even with that being said, I have a feeling that Steve Buscemi is going to pull out a win for best acting. He was really excellent in Boardwalk Empire and proved that he could headline and carry a show of his own after being a supporting player for most of his career.

Debbie:

Well, if that’s the case, then Steve Buscemi has time; let’s give the win to one of the most nominated actors who has been knocking it out of the park for many seasons in a row … on a show that people watch, ahem. And before you go getting all researchy on me, I already checked and Dexter does better than Mad Men and that’s on a pay channel.

Bob:

If we’re using ratings as a measure of giving out awards, let’s just give Emmy’s to Two and a Half Men and NCIS every year!

#FNL FTW

But seriously folks … Bob, you know I’ve only watched S1 of Mad Men thus far (Starting S2 next week). But I saw the scene from the Suitcase where Don dresses down Peggy … Just from that scene, it doesn’t seem she’s grown that much.

Talk to me again when you’ve properly gotten to the episode. I think you will likely change your tune. A lot of what you saw has to do with the peculiar relationship between Peggy and Don. He has the ability to turn her right back into that wide-eyed girl from the secretary pool, even as he manages to be her biggest supporter.

I’m pulling for Moss and Hamm as well. I finally sat down and watched the full 4 seasons of Mad Men. It’s one of the few shows that actually deserve the hype and the “suitcase” episode was probably the best of the series.
