Not only did the Smurfs get too much screen time compared to the AGT contestants (go to the 3:35 mark in the clip below to see one of their appearances) but so did Stevie Nicks who performed twice! I understand that the show wants to feature guest performers as a way to get great ratings but those guest performances should not be the meat of an episode. Tonight, the guests (that includes the Smurfs) took almost half of the air time if not more. That’s too much! Do you agree?
First up were Ian Johnson, Summerwind Skippers, and Purrfect Angelz. After yet another super long pause, Nick announced that no one was moving on. I was not surprised as those three acts did not measure up to the others last night. Piers was shocked that Summerwind Skippers weren’t sent through to the next round. Really, Piers? Their performance last night was great but would you pay to see an hour-long show from them? Not sure.
Stevie Nicks performed her new single. We learned that last season’s AGT winner Michael Grimm is opening for Stevie Nick’s during her upcoming tour.
Next up were POPLYFE and Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. Considering the fact that the first three acts were sent packing and the fact that POPLYFE and Landau gave great performances yesterday, I was expecting Nick to announce that both were going to the next round … which he did. Sharon predicted that both acts will be in the final.
Mauricio Herrera, Captain & Maybelle, Lys Agnes, and Monet, were the next ones asked to the stage. Without much surprise, Nick announced that Lys was going through to the next round. She was the one amongst the four acts who offered the best performance yesterday.
Fighting Gravity, an act that finished in the Top 4 last year, was back on the AGT stage to amaze us one last time, which you can watch below. The group has been working to develop a massive show that they hope to play on Broadway or in Vegas.
It was now time for the preview for the upcoming The Smurfs movie followed by another performance from Stevie Nicks.
Finally, the SH’Boss Boys, Seth Grabel, and Professor Splash were asked to the stage. Nick announced that the SH’Boss Boys were not going through. Then it was time for the judges to decide which act between Seth Grabel and Professor Splash would go to the semi-finals. Sharon voted for Seth Grabel. Howie once again checked Twitter to see the live reactions from fans of the show to help him make his decision. Howie voted for Professor Splash. So it was up to Piers to break the tie. Piers said that he was voting for the act that he thought has the best chance of winning and then announced Professor Splash. Mmm … not sure that America will vote for the Professor as this year’s winner considering the quality of the other acts going through the next round and the fact that these other acts could probably sustain an hour-long show more than he could. Once again this season, magicians don’t get much love.
Going through to the next round are: POPLYFE, Landau Eugene Murphy Jr, Lys Agnes, and Professor Splash.
Next week, it’s the final round of quarter-finals. Then it’ll be YouTube Week before we get to the semi-finals.
