This is a good week for DVD releases, with plenty to choose from for the pick of the week. From the more mainstream and current, new sets for Entourage and Damages are joined by the final season of ER. Given the way the few that watch Damages go on about the show, it would certainly be a worthy pick. For me though, it was quickly trumped by a pair of entries from across the pond.
I’ve mentioned before how much I dig Poirot. It’s must see TV for me. So much so that I’ve even grown to like the pretentious way Alan Cumming says “Poirot” when he introduces the show on Masterpiece Mystery. As great as Hercule is, he was also topped by the latest release for MI-5. When shows go on this long, they have a tendency to start to slip. That’s not the case with MI-5. The story of Lucas over the course of seasons 8 and 9 has been far and away my favorite part of the series. I would probably recommend going back to at least the beginning of season 8 if you are new to the show, but MI-5 remains a favorite. Although, even that is still not my pick of the week.
Instead, I’m going with the HBO Latin America Original, Alice. That is partly due to the fact that I’ve already seen Poirot and MI-5, but also because Alice has been recommended to me on a few other occasions. I don’t know a lot about the show, but what I do know sounds very good. And… bonus… it’s an HBO series that doesn’t come with the usual HBO upcharge. $17.99 is a solid deal.
