Some of the acts not going through:
- GTR, a duo of female rappers did not impress the judges and the crowd with their off key singing and their basic dancing. They were Xed by Howie and Sharon. The highlight of their performance was when Nick joined them on stage afterwards and that the three of them danced, including one of the GTR girls doing the split.
- Several burlesque dancers over the past seasons were voted through to Vegas Week. However, 27-year-old Tomahawk Tassels will not be one of them. Dressed as an Indian, Tomahawk performed her sexy dance routine inside a kayak. Howie was entertained by the act and even had fun with the performer and the paddle she used to cover her bare upper body.
- If Chris, the boy with the wire hair, had been good at juggling, he would have surely made it through to the next round. However, since he didn’t do too well at the juggling part of his act, he was Xed by two judges and got three Nos in the end. The strength of his hair was not enough to pull him through to Vegas Week. You can watch for yourself in the clip below.
- Two of the judges Xed Jenny Rocha and the Painted Ladies — who were not painted by the way — because their big butts (see at the 0:45 mark in the clip above) and their basic dancing with some sexy moves were far from entertaining.
- Eric & Christlo did not kill it as they promised us in their pre-performance clip. The singers and dancers were amusing but it was because they were so horrible at singing and dancing. They were so bad at trying to become the next boy band that Howie even claimed they are “Milli Vanilla” — this is in reference to the duo Milli Vanilli who achieved world-wide fame and won a Grammy… until it was discovered that it was not their own voices we heard on their albums and when they performed!
The Worst of the Worst: The man behind Magic of Mystique made a huge promise before his act: we would see 90% of stuff we’ve never seen before! Turns out that we’ve seen 100% of his tricks before. The performer explained himself afterwards saying it’s the way that it was put together that was the 90% of things we’ve never seen before! Did he see his act? The way his act was put together was far from original. Luckily, all judges said no. If you want to see his magical performance, go to the 1:46 mark in the video clip above.
Some of the acts going through:
- Paul, aka Fantastic Fig, and his cat Neuton offered us some really nifty card tricks. Paul is quite the character and I must admit that based on his looks and his pre-performance interview, I thought his act would be wacky and just plain wrong. Paul was an attorney who, supposedly, represented Jimmy Hendrix, and is now doing magic full time. He claims he is a psychic magician. 76-year-old Paul was spot on with his magic tricks but the dancing (?!) was boring and useless. He has three lovely assistant that serves as background and danced a bit. I hope he’ll use them in his magic tricks when we next see him. All three judges said yes but Howie warned Paul to remove the dance from his act.
- Mike Stone and the Kritikal Band were able to do something few people have: get Piers go from X to yes. The band gave a fun performance and Sharon said they were smoking.
- 42-year-old Cindy Chang amazed the crowd and the judges with her impressive opera voice. I thought that she had a bit too much tremolo in her singing for my taste. She was so overwhelmed by the experience and the crowd’s cheers that she started crying. See, Cindy’s parents told her when she was younger that she shouldn’t sing and her family didn’t know that she was auditioning for AGT. I wonder what her parents will say now!
- One of the very few solo singers who have made it to the next your will be 18-year-old Taylor Davis.
- The 13 to 22 year olds who are part of Fatally Unique Dance Team danced a very well executed routine that was energetic and in sync. They not only impressed the judges and crowd with their dance moves but also with their unique and very bright costumes.
The “I Can’t Believe this Act is Going to Vegas” act: I’m sorry, dear AGT judges, but what Tricky Jackson offered us was NOT talent. He may be a well-toned body builder but besides showing his muscles, he did nothing. He didn’t deserve a pass to Vegas even if the crowd cheered. See for yourself at the 0:56 mark in the clip below.
The Show Stealers: The globe of death is something we’ve seen before and, if I recall, even on previous seasons of AGT. However, what made the performance from the Fearless Flores Family unique is that the people driving the motorcycles inside the globe were siblings aged 8 and 13! They were AMAZING! And their father was standing inside the globe to add extra danger to the trick. As Sharon said, the kids’ timing, coordination, and balance were fantastic. Not only will they be back, but they promised that they would have up to four motorcycles in the globe at the same time!
The Best of the Best: Ian Johnson wowed the crowd and judges with his incredible yo-yo tricks. He was entertaining and fun to watch. He is so good that I wouldn’t be surprised if he is of the level required to participate in those international yo-yo competitions. If you want to see his tricks, check the video I put for Tricky Jackson above; Ian performed before Tricky.
