The Voice – Finally the finals

In the end, how did The Final Four stack up? Not too shabby. It appears a toss up between Javier and Beverly going into the final show. Plus, the coaches perform stuff ... poorly.

- Season 1, Episode 11 - "The Finals"

And … we’re off.

Powers That Be at NBC? Please, please, please, please, please let the final episode of The Voice be all it’s cracked up to be.

It’s not that difficult: We’ve got the top picks of the coaches’ litters in the running, so things have to rock ‘n’ roll along well, don’t they? Don’t they?

Bueller? Bueller … ?!??

Well, let’s see what we’ve got.

First up, we’re “treated” to the four coaches “quadruping it up” to Queen’s “Under Pressure” to comical effect. Come on, guys — how long did you rehearse this tune? 18 seconds? Blake growled it, Christina couldn’t reach the notes no matter how mightily as she tried, Adam softened his parts up so much he was girlish (sorry, Brittany) and Cee Lo was pretty much pointless … plus he could have used a girdle. It was laughable. They would have been tossed on America’s Got Talent, I’d reckon.

Luckily, it’s the contestants we came to see, not the coaches.

Javier Colon puts it out there first with his clear, strong, authoritative vocal on the original “Stitch By Stitch.” He makes it look easy and sets the tone for everyone else who follows him. That’s exactly what you’re supposed to do, right?

The first coach / contestant duet of the night came with Blake Shelton and Dia Frampton taking on Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” to poor effect. Not only did they look as if they were backed up by a shoddy contingent of Men In Black singers, they both sang as if Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones were the ones up there showcasing the song. *ugh* No other duet from this point forward can do anything but go up from here.

“Afraid To Sleep” is Vicci Martinez‘ original tune. It was performed adequately, but it was rather subdued, calm, cool and collected. It wasn’t the “wowzer” Vicci needed for a finale piece. It failed to do anything to put her in the lead. She wasn’t watching Javier’s performance, that’s for certain.

What happened when Christina Aguilera and Beverly McLellan sat together to double up on Christina’s ballad “Beautiful” was a 180° turnaround, however. Let me tell you what:

Best. Duet. Of. The. Night. Period.

There were several things that gave me chills about it. First off, Beverly singing that first “I am beautiful” in all her big, bold baldness, eyes thrown wide at anyone daring enough to look her way. That was an impression I’ll keep with me for a while. A funnier moment was toward the end when she flashed devil horns with her right hand while matching Christina note for note. And there were plenty more moments in between. The entire performance was terrific. It even made me like Christina for a few moments. Just a few.

In the middle of Dia Frampton’s original “Inventing Shadows” you could see a concerned look on Blake Shelton’s face that didn’t bode well. Dia sounded amateurish and frantic, appearing almost distracted while singing the song. Nothing outstanding at all about it. (Again, Dia didn’t see Javier’s first stint.)

Segue to Adam Levine and Javier belting out MJ’s “Man In The Mirror” with aplomb. The first two thirds of it worked, seemingly coming on par with what Christina and Beverly did before them, but the latter end of it got a bit muddled and lost its structure. It still beat out Blake and Dia’s sad take, though.

The last original song of the night was courtesy of Beverly. “Lovesick” was a strange, weird upbeat tune with some interesting elements to it. Terrific beat, tempo and chorus, but it was fractured and kind of all over the place. Was it enough to beat out Javier and his “Stitch By Stitch”? No.  But she definitely had a good time up there putting on a show.

The last duet of the night rivaled the coaches “Under Pressure” at the beginning of the show. “Love Is A Battlefield” was just as comical with all the pronounced air jousting by the dancers and Cee Lo’s Gwar-like outfit. There’s just so many things he can sing, isn’t there? This wasn’t one of them.

It’s a battle between Javier and Beverly in my estimation. I would like to see Beverly take it, but I fear her appearance might scare too many away. The only way Javier will lose is by the fact he’s failed several times in his past endeavors as an artist.

If the spectacle of this episode wasn’t enough for you, you have one final opportunity to catch the monkey business on the season ender … where I expect to be “trending” per Alison Haislip and her dippy media room.

Digging the new avatar, Michael. You’ve never looked better.

Thank you, Bob

If you ever wondered what Klingon pop music is like, see Vicci and Cee Lo’s performance of “Love is a Battlefield.”

June 29, 2011 at 12:03 PM

. . . . .

Wasn’t that just hideous, Ruby … ?!?

I thought my Gwar link above typified Cee Lo’s adornment spiffily …

June 29, 2011 at 12:42 PM

It was Gwar-like! When I saw Cee Lo’s outfit, my mind immediately went to Chancellor Gorkon though.

I have to disagree with you on this being a race between Javier and Beverly. While Bev is the feel-good contestant on this show, I think ever since “Heartless” Dia has been the front-runner. I expect it will come down to Dia and Javier, and Dia will win simply because she’s cuter and there are so many artsy-fartsy people who love listening to that kind of music that she does (no disrespect to them or her).

June 29, 2011 at 12:57 PM

. . . . .

Off the top of my head, I didn’t think of Chancellor Gorkon … but you’re right Ruby … !!!

I understand completely it could come down to a Dia / Javier (of the skewed hat) contest. And, to me at least, that would be a boring contest indeed.

Did we watch the same 2 hour show? I think I liked everything you hated and found the stuff you loved – just OK. Too funny.

I really think any of them could win….

. . . . .

I know which show I watched last evening Carla … just not certain of the one you did. *smiles*

So … what you’re saying is that the original performances by Dia and Vicci weren’t pulled out from Carson Daly’s Bucket-O-Lackluster … ??? You mean you actually enjoyed Viccia and Blake’s “I Won’t Back Down” … ?!? Assure me, please, you didn’t dash off and download “Under Pressure” as botched by the coaches. Please.

Javier is more plain vanilla to me than anything, but the dude’s got some pipes. Beverly’s performance last night was off, not her best in the least. But she can belt. Dia and Vicci aren’t in the running … or they may be, but not in my book.

… wait … wait … are you saying you want a lunch date with Carson and Alison … ?!?!??

(Truth speakin’ though, Carla: Anyone could win it.)

June 29, 2011 at 12:13 PM

My favorite original song was Vicci’s.

. . . . .

And that is Ed Zachery what I love about music, Carla: The diversified views we all have about tunes.

You might taste “strawberry” when you hear something … I might taste something all together different.

And that thrills me to no end.

June 29, 2011 at 12:06 PM

I preferred Adam and Javier to Bev and Christina, but even I’ll admit that the made me not hate “I’m Beautiful” … but just for a second.

I still loved Dia’s performance. Javier has always been the guy I’ve expected to win, but she’s quickly become a favorite.

DIdn’t hate “Love is a Battlefield” as much as you did, I guess … Nor did I love it as much as Carla did.

Interesting results on iTunes:

Dia’s “Inventing Shadows” is #1 single right now.

Javier’s “Stitch by Stitch” is #2

Vicci’s “Afraid to Sleep” is #14 and

Beverly’s “Lovesick” is #28

June 29, 2011 at 12:35 PM

. . . . .

And the best news of all that you didn’t report, Carla: Per Alison Haislip, I’m trending world-wide.

Go figger.

It doesn’t surprise me in the least Beverly’s tune is pulling up the rear. I’m very happy for Dia’s effort – just not my cup of tea and I stand by my critique of the performance.

This is akin to my like of Casey Abrams on Idol. The dude oozed music out his pores. Did it translate to the average Joe? No.

And again: That’s all right.

Hmm. I was folding laundry during Dia’s performance, so I didn’t see the visual. Just heard the song. And I couldn’t wait for it to be over. Every breath she took was an exaggerated gasp that was really distracting for me. Almost like tennis players punctuate a shot with a grunt. Maybe it was just me.
I like Vicci, but I agree that Javier’s tune was simply the best by far. Radio ready.
Two other things I noticed — the was spontaneous gut laughter in my house many times during “Love is a Battlefield.” And did anyone else see Cee Lo make that um… rude gesture at the end of the show. You know, when he put his fingers around his mouth and then stuck his tongue through them and licked the air in a mighty fashion? Ew!

June 29, 2011 at 1:28 PM

. . . . .

Side note regarding “… tennis players punctuate a shot with a grunt …”:

I attended my boss’s tennis tournament earlier in the year in a show of support. During a practice session between two players, one woman’s outburst each and every time – EACH AND EVERY TIME – sounded like a goat bleating. I kid you not.

Did I mention she did this each and every time? Talk about “The Voice” …

I don’t know if it was a psychological tactic to gain advantage or she was an amateur sheerer in her spare time.

Each. And. Every. Time.

Did I mention that?

I am a Beverly fan but didn’t think her original song was the big finale that she needed to win the whole contest. I did love her duet..it was awesome. What I didn’t like was how completely bored Christina looked and how it seemed such an effort for her to say anything nice about the other contestants. Her hat collection gave me a giggle though.

. . . . .

One of the many reasons I do not care for Christina, Toni

June 29, 2011 at 4:22 PM

I predict a Dia Frampton win, and a gigantic hit with “Inventing Shadows”. I don’t think this was Dia’s best performance, but the song lyrics are some of the best poetry I’ve seen since Sylvia Plathe (sp?). You just have to be chronically clinically depressed to get it. [Or living with someone who is.] The style is a match with Dia’s voice and persona, and I think future performances of this song will actually outdo the one we saw in this show.

Christina sings better than she talks, that’s for sure. The duet with Beverly will be the kind of clip that will go into the vault as a “classic” redo of this song. “Lovesick”, on the other hand, left me cold.

I really liked Javier’s take on “Stitch By Stitch”, but vanilla is a good flavor for me. For all of the kind words said about “nice guy” Javier, there were some major production problems with the “Man In The Mirror” duet that upstaged Adam several times. [Anyone remember the movie “Jailhouse Rock” where Elvis’ old cellmate & mentor tries to ride Elvis’ coat tails into a TV special?] Adam’s & Javier’s duet gave me the impression that Adam was treating Javier as an equal and Javier was treating Adam like a backup singer. I’m thinking of writing a movie script titled “All About Javier”.

It is sad that Vicci’s best work was in the overstaged duet. Was “Afraid To Sleep” really written for Vicci, or did the writer get her confused with JLo? Good song, wrong singer.

June 29, 2011 at 4:24 PM

Under Pressure didn’t impress me either. I thought that Christina and Adam did okay but Blake gave the best vocals. Agree about Cee Lo and think they could have chosen a better song.

After last night I think that Beverly will win, though agree that her and Javier will be the top two. At one point in Beautiful it looked like she was holding back tears. There were so many emotional swings. The song title describes the performance. “Lovesick” rocked. It could have used even more energy but it has real potential.

I liked Man in the Mirror except for one repetitive piece of harmony. Javier’s original was incredible. Christina looked like she slept through it. Poor, tired thing. :)

I liked I Won’t Back Down but understand why you didn’t. Dia’s original was beautiful. I didn’t notice the “exaggerated gasp” that Tara speaks of until after I’d read the comment and watched the performance for the 3rd time. Didn’t bother me. I’d like to hear her on the radio and see her perform at intimate venues but I don’t think that she’s THE voice. I feel like she needs to work on her breath work. Her phrasing (not sure that’s the right word) lacks flow. On the other hand, maybe that’s part of her style.

“Love Is A Battlefield” was just weird but I kind of dug it. My reaction: “That was unexpected.” Those child dancers made me feel mildly inadequate. :) I liked Vicci’s original. She’s super-talented as well.

The final four, along with Nakia, were my favorites. I look forward to following Jersey Girl’s Raquel’s career. One of the reasons I loved this show despite not being a fan of Idol is that they’re all experienced pros, being mentored by even more experienced pros.

And Carson? Loosen up, buddy! After years on TV, he seems to lack personality. He barely moves his mouth when he talks. Emote!

Overall, I feel like their exhaustion is showing a little – though some more than others (Christina).
