Two years have passed since the critical and cult favorite Pushing Daisies got unceremoniously canceled by ABC. The show’s first season lost a huge amount of momentum due to being cut short by the writers’ strike — and ABC did the show no favors by not rerunning the episodes in the spring or summer to boost viewer interest during the long hiatus. An established show can survive such a long down-time, but not one that’s on the fringe to begin with. Pushing Daisies was a lovely fable, a love story, a detective show all rolled up into one extremely colorful package with a great cast that included Lee Pace, Anna Friel, Chi McBride, Kristin Chenoweth, Ellen Greene and Swoosie Kurtz. It was whimsical and charming and really needed time to find its audience, but after three episode during its second season, ABC pulled the plug.
Since then, creator Bryan Fuller has promised to wrap up the dangling plot threads with a 12-part comic book series, and for two years the fans have been patiently waiting without a peep, a hint, a clue to when or if this comic will ever see the light of day. Then, over the Easter weekend this year, Fuller did something that surprised and excited his followers on Twitter (which quickly hit the entertainment press) — he teased us with sneak peeks at several pages from the first issue! You can see them here, here, here and here (no worries — the comic will be in full color).
Unfortunately, there is still no release date for the comic. The intention was to have it out in the first quarter of 2011, but the original distributor (a division of DC Comics) was shut down and now the comic is once again in limbo. How much longer will we have to wait? Will the fans still be interested more than two years after the last episode aired? I’m not a regular reader of comics, but I did love the show and I am eagerly awaiting this “third season” to make its long overdue appearance. Now, can we maybe get a movie too?
