Cold Open: Dominique Strauss in Jail – I was surprised I didn’t think if the Strauss incident as something that might head up the episode tonight. It wasn’t hilarious but it worked out as a nice, short, timely sketch.
Monologue: Justin Timberlake — Not necessarily funny, but definitely clever.
Liquorville — Timberlake’s done these costumed characters I think every time he’s hosted SNL. Some parts of them are great, while others I probably don’t get because I’m an old fart.
Herb Welch with WXPD News — This is one of the better recurring characters. I loved when Timberlake’s character grabbed the mic from Herb, only to have Herb whip out another one and smack him in the face with that. It went a bit over the top when his hand showed up in the newsroom, though.
The Golden Rule: Three-Way Song — This was right up there with the others. Instant classic. Lyrics time!
Your mom says, “Hi” — Jinx!
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah no no
Yeah yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Summertime in the city
And everybody’s having sex
You know I just got a page from a girl that I met last week at the Payless
Shoe stores
I also have a cutie to call who likes the way I knock on her boots
Well let’s help them back
Let’s handle that
In two-to-six hours,
We’ll meet back here and regroup
Now let’s shoop
Roll up to her crib with some Bartles & James
Hop off the buss with the Alizé
Now hold up player, whatchu diggity-doing here?
I should diggity-ask you the same
And she sang
Hey, boys I want you both
I hope that you think that’s cool
(Say word?)
I know most guys won’t freak together
She forgot about the Golden Rule — a huh huh
It’s OK to put us in a three-way
It’s not gay when it’s in a three-way
With a honey in the middle there’s some leeway
The area’s grey in a one, two, three-way
Normally, I don’t get down with dudes
But tonight is a special exception (Great)
See you’re my best friend
Through thick and thin
Now it’s time to make a triple connection
Lights off
Here in the dark (Here in the dark)
It’s so hard to tell (So hard to tell)
Where her body ends (La la)
And my homie’s begins (Ew wee)
This rule dates back (The Golden Rule)
To ancient Greece (Takin’ about Cesar)
We’re two Jack Trippers and a Chrissy
The new Three’s Company
It’s OK to put us in a three-way
It’s not gay when it’s in a three-way
With a honey in the middle there’s some leeway
The area’s grey in a one, two three-way
Fellas. Get ready.
Doin’ us a chick
Helicopter dick, go! Hellicopter dick. Helicopter dick
Doin’ us a chick
Helicopter dick
And all of that was OK
‘Cuz it was in a three-way
It’s right there when you see the instant replay (boom)
Maybe two is enough
That’s what they’ll say
But we’ll say, “Hell no.”
It’s a one, two, three-way
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
The Golden Rule
Musical Guest: Lady Gaga — All I’ll say is Lady gaga did not disappoint in the theatricals and sets. And I’ll end with a big WTF with the big fake pregnant belly and birthing scene in the second song. Holy crap.
Weekend Update — It was kind of unusual to see so few guests on WU this week. Some great stuff, though, including the “Really?!” bit.
What’s That Name? — We’ve seen this sketch before and it’s still funny. The only thing that might have made this funnier is if Chris Kirkpatrick himself showed up.
Love Tunnel Ride — We first saw this sketch back when Jim Carey hosted, and it was brilliant then; one of the best of the season. This one was still pretty damn funny, but just as with many recurring sketches on SNL (What Up With That being the exception), they took it a little too far and it lost its magic.
Secret Word — Another game show? This one’s getting a bit old for me, and not much new is done with Wiig’s character to make it worth bringing back again and again.
The Barry Gibb Talk Show — I had a feeling we’d see an old cast member come back for this episode, and here we had Jimmy Fallon back ans Barry Gibb! “I’m Barry effing Gibb! I survived the Rapture!”
Lastly, I guess I’ll end the season off by noting that my guesses for who’d guest host this season were pretty well way off. I got a couple, but I clearly have no clue how most of these guests are picked.
Hands down, best episode of the season. I laughed all the way through and Lady Gaga was awesome as usual. I got goosebumps during the Edge of Glory part of her first number. It’s hard to pick the guest hosts for a full season without knowing who has a movie or album to promote. JT has two movies this summer and Gaga’s album is out Tuesday. You have to figure those things into your prognosticating! Good luck next season!
