Cougar Town – The Lou Diamond Phillips Penny Can

There's a whole lot of creepy on this week's 'Cougar Town.' Between Jules and Travis and the Children of the Corn, we really need Lou Diamond Phillips to save the day.

- Season 2, Episode 20 - "Free Fallin'"

“I don’t know exactly what your race is, but I am into it in a big way.” – Laurie

I love that Lou Diamond Phillips has 1) made his second appearance on Cougar Town, and 2) is wearing another bolo tie. I will sadly admit to watching I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!, which is probably the saddest thing I’ve ever admitted to, but Lou Diamond Phillips came off incredibly well on that show. Everyone else seemed like a jerk, but he seemed cool and capable. I’ve kind of been rooting for him ever since.

That, however, doesn’t mean that I approve of the Lou Diamond Phillips Penny Can. Although, I do suppose that like Bobby, I can get behind a penny can that can climb walls. It’s also going to be interesting to see how his newfound wealth changes the show. Bobby has always been the friendly hobo: Bobby in an apartment just seems weird; like putting a dog in a sweater.

However, Travis on a boat is just as weird. I like how we’re seeing the fallout from Travis’s failed proposal, but I don’t like the idea of him dropping out of school. If he’s not at school, how will we see Kevin? I love that guy.

Jules’s attempt at tough love was pretty horrifying, mainly because it involved her making out with Grayson while he was doing a pretty amazing Travis impression. However, the one night stand wasn’t much better. Basically, everything having to do with Jules and Travis was pretty icky this week.

With that said, I completely sympathize with Jules, because I can totally see myself in her position about 18 years from now. I’ll totally be the sad mom trying to get her son to stay with her always. However, if my son dropped out of college, I’d still kick his ass out of the house. It’s one thing to help out your kids when they need it, but I am not a fan of rewarding laziness. Yes, Travis had a bad breakup, but that’s what college is about. He needs to learn how to suck it up.

The Children of the Corn storyline with Ellie, Grayson and Tom kind of dragged a little bit for me this week. Yes, those kids were creepy, but it just seemed to go on a little long. I did, however, love that Tom finally got to be in the group a little bit. I’ve always felt sorry for him and I never particularly enjoy characters on sitcoms whose main purpose is to serve as whipping boys for the cast. It just makes me kind of sad. So here’s hoping that Tom won’t completely creep everyone out and become just the creepy neighbor again.
