Cold Open: The Situation Room — Yeah, it was again political-themed, but it was a funny take on what I guess is Obama celebrating “his” kill of Osama bin Laden. I’m not all up on his visit to Texas, so I just went with it tonight.
Monologue: Ed Helms — Nothing remarkable about this one. I liked that he compared himself to a guy who’d stand outside Dress Barn holding his wife’s purse … if he was married.
Corn Syrup Message — Strangely, this one first played when Zach Galifianakis hosted. Starts out funny and really gets you when the overweight “daughter” comes in asking for more juicy-juice.
What Up With That — Paul Simon was pretty awesome in this sketch, and then the real Lindsay Buckingham shows up, nailing an awesome guitar riff! This is one recurring sketch that SNL’s able to keep me looking forward to, with the surprise guests and surprise additions to his entourage every time.
The Ambiguously Gay Duo — A full live cast! Nice! Colbert and Carell have done the voices for the cartoon before, but to see them play as a couple of the vilains was awesome. Then we had Ed Helms ad another vilain, Jon Hamm and Jimmy Fallon as Ace and Gary. Funny stuff!
Musical Guest: Paul Simon — Well, if you came to hear Paul Simon, you got Paul Simon. Sure, he didn’t sing his classics, but he pretty much sounded like his same great self.
Weekend Update — Anyone else getting sick of the Garth & Kat sketch? Still liking the Anthony Crispino bit, though — still makes me laugh.
Poker Game — These are always pretty funny, and this one was no exception. However, that Human Centipede ending was just out of nowhere.
One Take Tony — This was an odd sketch in that it was pretty short, and then of course ended with an unnecessary theme song. It’s as though they’re testing the waters to see if the sketch can make a repeat performance later, so a theme song fits.
Ann-Margret Tries to Throw Away a Wad of Paper Into a Trashcan — Another bizarre, short sketch. I guess this comes from Ms. Margret’s famous Viva Las Vegas dance scene — even the music is the same.
A Republican Candidate Message — They managed to squeeze this one in before the end of the episode. This would have fit better as part of the Weekend Update segment. Heck, even the segments within Weekend Update were longer than this one.
Loved the Lindsay Buckingham appearance. Never thought that would happen.
Ambiguously gay duo was pretty amazing.
This show could have been much better. The setups were WAY too long. Every sketch was too drawn out. Even Gay Duo was underwhelming after the surprise of seeing the live part. That should have been one of the most talked about skits but it was just there.
Lindsay Buckingham, Paul Simon and skits about Ann-Margaret? What demo were they trying to reach? No offense to those talented people, but I guess they are saving young and hip for next week?
