Bones – I didn’t see that coming

Things did not necessarily go the way I expected on this week's installment. Will the big dramatic moment have the emotional impact it could have? Only time will tell.

- Season 6, Episode 22 - "The Hole in the Heart"

So Bones finally pays off the long rumored death. I’m not sure it is whom I would have picked (OK, it obviously wasn’t who I picked, considering, you know, I did a whole post on who I picked), and, well, I have my concerns. However, that wasn’t the only big thing that happened this week, was it? What was that other thing again? It’s right on the tip of my tongue….

Man, did I swing and miss hard! Vincent Nigel-Murray wasn’t in my top three suspects. I’m not sure, though, that his death will have the impact on the characters (or the audience) that some of the other candidates I discussed. Don’t take that statement as a criticism of Nigel-Murray … I’m certainly going to miss the humor that his character brought to the show.

He was a unique character, to be sure. He brought something different to the lab, and was one of the squinterns I liked the most (Once I finally embraced the concept got over what they did to Zack). I thought the final bit was especially appropriate. I’m curious as to how accurate his trivia was. The Eiffel Tower really shrinks six inches in the winter? (Apparently so!)

I’m not sure where I am on the whole Booth/Bones relationship anymore (and, based on the comments from my first post back, you guys don’t give a flying flip about my opinion on this particular topic). HOWEVER, the scene where Bones spills the proverbial beans to Angela? Classic. The drama of the moment was well played by Emily Deschanel, and Michaela Conlin and T.J. Thyne nailed the comedy.

I thought the whole dino-human arm wrestling concept was pretty silly. I’m all for fun, hypotheticals like this — the Cavemen vs. Astronauts from Angel is an all time fave. However, I lose interest when the hypothetical turns literal. Hodgins saved the bit for me though, with the excellent delivery of the line, “I’m the human.” Yes sir, you are.

I’m not sure exactly what Tina Majorino brought to this week’s episode, but I will say this — I am a big fan of the actress. I’ve always thought that Bones could use a larger presence from the FBI, and a green Agent fits the bill. I’d love to see more of her going forward.

Notes & Quotes

  • I’ve always loved the inserts of “Booth” driving through downtown D.C., but I always laugh at the non-existent traffic.
  • “Vincent’s favorite song was ‘Da Lime in Da Coconut.’” – Bones
“Seriously? Because that’s like … that’s my jam.” – Sweets

I remember last week, my dad saw the trailer for this weeks Bones. It said that somebody was going to die. As soon as that was said I told him, “It’s going to be one of the random interns that are in the show.” It’s a shame that it had to be him, but that’s how it goes.

He was by far my favorite intern. He will be missed.

The decision to kill off Vincent was because Ryan Cartwright got a job!
Cartwright’s Syfy pilot, Alphas, got picked up to series.

Oh no. Mr Nigel-Murray :( he was one of the only interns I actually liked and wanted to see. Why couldn’t the one who died have been Wendell who I absolutely cannot stand (for reasons that I don’t understand, but the episodes including him are never close to my heart and make me long for Zach’s return – psychotic or not!).

It was a really nice death. I just wished the music would have played over him dying. It was a powerful moment and he will be missed.

I’m watching this season without much enthusiasm and this episode was no different. Even though the build-up to the death was well done (for a second I thought it would be Cam) I was disappointed.

The actual death is an example for the declining writing of the show. It was a cheap plot device! Vincent was mistaken for Booth? Seriously? Without an ulterior motive of the Sniper? Just, “Oops my bad. He Shouldn’t have picked up the phone.”
Imo it is a lame way to justify the death of the Squintern and have a reason for Booth to feel guilty at the same time.
