Saturday Night Live – Tina Fey / Ellie Goulding

A baby bump, a bigger baby bump, some Osama bin Laden jokes, Michael Bolton, Trump, and a special card for "mother." It's another 'SNL,' and we'll have embedded videos here when we have them for you!

- Season 36, Episode 20 - "Tina Fey / Ellie Goulding"

Cold Open: Osama Bin Laden Video Will — Well color me surprised that SNL actually made a reference to Bin Laden in the Cold Open. I was betting they might not base a skit on it at all.

Monologue: Tina Fey — So Maya Rudolph is clearly further along in her pregnancy than Tina Fey, or she has one hell of a big one in there! The monologue wasn’t all that remarkable, but that spot at the end with the “babies” duetting with the moms was more disturbing than funny.

Undeclared Candidates Debate — Hey, look at that — Chuck was half right with Darrell Hammond coming back on as Trump for this episode. Seriously, he does one hell of a Trump impression!

Little Mermaid — Wow, not one, but TWO Osama-related skits tonight! The funniest thing about this sketch was Osama’s shroud-covered body floating down .. and that was about it. Oh, and maybe the stingray conspiracy theorist.

SNL Digital Short: Michael Bolton — This turned out funnier than I thought it would at first, particularly when Bolton starting hopping around to other movies like Scarface and Forrest Gump.

Musical Guest: Ellie Goulding — This is the first I’d heard of Ms. Goulding. Kinda odd that she’d pick a cover song to perform for her second song, but they were both decent. Her voice reminds me of Björk.

Weekend Update — Stefon is always the highlight of Weekend Update. I really believe the script writers purposely don’t share the script with Bill Hader ahead of time, so he has no choice but to crack the hell up every time … and I love it!

Love this quote:

“Wait, you have TV in hell?” – Seth
“Oh just NBC.” – The Devil

Child Birth Class — Holy crap! I swear to God I know exactly what video this sketch was parodying, as it was something my wife and I were forced to watch when she was pregnant. Yeah, a small poodle is about right. Funniest sketch of the night, but, then again, probably mostly only funny to parents.

Bedelia — I said this before and I’ll say it again — I don’t really get this sketch as funny. It’s sorta part pathetic and part endearing, that a daughter would be so into her mom. I can’t help but feel bad for Bedelia, not laughing at her.

Pregnant in Heels — My favorite part of this skit: “Signature Bravo music and shots of a dog.” Yeah, that was pretty much the only thing that I found very funny in this sketch.

Googie Rene’s Slightly Damaged Prom Wear Barn — It seems most of the sketches tonight had one decent, notable joke, and then not much more. This one, for me, was the grass stain on the first dress. Hilarious!

Hallmark “Mother” Collection — This faux commercial made up for the past few duds of skits, I’ve gotta say. Maybe it was the late hour, but this one had me laughing.

The reason she sang “Your Song” is because she just performed it at the Royal Wedding reception.

The bigger question is…if Sir Elton John is a guest at your wedding & reception, why do you have anyone else sing that song?!

You thought she sounded like Bjork? I heard a very heavily accented Dolores O’Riordan, especially during Your Song.

Stefon was hilarious! And you’re right, he has no idea what he’ll be reading until he gets on stage. The writers just have fun coming up with the most absurd things to make him lose it. And out of that, my cat has a new name – Baloney Danza (his name is Stone and we call him Stoney Baloney all the time, so…).

The child birth video was hysterical … and I’m not a parent. It was just too funny, especially when Kristin Wiig got on top of Maya Rudolph. The faces they made at that point had me gasping for air.

And thanks for the shout out on my prediction!

While I was out last night one of the TVs in the bar had SNL on and I have to say that the episode was a lot funnier to watch on mute with the exception of the birthing skit. Otherwise watching Keenan dressed as Sebastian fighting Osama’s corpse was funnier not knowing what was going on in the skit.
