Again, the power of television

Despite the instantaneous supply of information we're able to obtain in this day and age, television still doesn't cease to amaze us with its power.

I saw the little green light in the upper right-hand corner of my cell phone blinking. I had a text. It was my wife.

“You need to watch the news” is the text she sent me. I flipped on my television.

There was NBC’s Brian Williams, informing us the President of the United States would be coming on the air at anytime announcing to the American people the death of Osama bin Laden.

I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news The Twin Towers had been attacked on September 11th, 2001. I remember turning on the television set and, along with millions of other people, being utterly horrified at the images I saw.

And now, with the announcement of bin Laden’s death from last week, I will remember exactly where I was when this particular door on terror closed.

And — despite the interesting, shocking and jaw-dropping news — I knew it didn’t mean the war on terror was over. Not by a long shot. There’s still lots and lots of information to be revealed. But it is a chapter that has been concluded.

Again: It’s the power of television.

I actually got teary eyed at the folks gathering around ground zero and at the White House. You are right.. the war on terror isn’t over but justice was done day for many many people, not just Americans. Our President and our Military sure made me proud today.

………. I was stranded on an island in Oregon when 911 happened and was suppose to get on a plane later that day. I got home 6 days later. Yesterday’s news brought ALL of this back to me in a flood. Not only the power of TV but the power of talk radio and the Internet. It was all there at once. Amazing. BUT not as amazing as that group of Navy Seals.

The power of the information highway is rapid fire bringing information to us faster then the speed of light. Back in 1945 it took almost 24 hours for the announcement to be made about the death of Adolph Hitler which ironically was made on May 1st.

Kudos to all of those involved in this monumental feat from the President to those special forces on the ground. The most amazing part of this to me is how tightly the secret was held over the past 8 months; loose lips sink ships. Even the media was taken off guard thinking when air time was first requested it would be regarding Libya.

For all of those who lost loved ones from 9/11, The USS Cole, the embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, and all other incidents done at the behest of bin Laden…justice does not always come swift but for them it has been served.

The problem with television is… you only hear and see what “THEY” want you to!

It is up to YOU to make an educated and informative decision based on what you believe and know to be true.

“I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”

-Martin Luther King, Jr.

I remember I was driving to work and for some reason that morning I had not turned on the TV at the house, all of a sudden the annocement came over the radio, I knew everyone was hearing it just like I was because cars were stopping. I pulled over to the side of the road and just cried. Finally composed myself and drove to work. Will never forget.

When the announcement came on the other night I was watching “Brothers & Sisters” I remember being annoyed that they were interupting until I heard what it was far then it was ok. So glad they got him, it is really too bad that it probaly won’t be long before another one takes his place. Keep up the good work our men and women in the armed forces, we need you and we love you!!!

I remember reading that there were people in other parts of the world dancing and celebrating while our towers burned. Now it’s our turn to dance… and sing… and celebrate! WHOOOO! God Bless America!!
