Bones – The things that we don’t say

Remember when I said I would never watch 'Bones' again? Well, I lied. And I'm back to answer (again) the question on many fan's minds: Do Booth and Brennan belong together?

- Season 6, Episode 20 - "The Pinocchio in the Planter"

I’ve never been particularly coy with my criticism of Bones. In fact, I have spent a considerable amount of time bashing the hell out of it really talking about my disappointment. So it is ironic, that, in the week I return to covering Bones, that the episode is about radical honesty. Will the bashing continue, or have I been turned around? The answer isn’t simple, but I’m here, right?

Now that we’re past the Hannah debacle (Yes, I said debacle … can we just move on?), things have slowly gelled into a Season 4 kind of vibe between Bones and Booth … Except that the whole history of the past two seasons is still there. The exchange between the two leads at the end was a reminder that the dynamic between the two will never be able to revert back to where they were before.

The buzz about show runner Hart Hanson’s writer’s room when breaking the finale was about the potential hooking up of Bones and Booth. Apparently, it was a pretty heated discussion. I can tell you that half the people in the room were wrong (I won’t say stupid … apparently, criticizing Hanson online is not allowed). The idea of pairing these two characters is past its time. I’ll be watching the same as you when we find out what the decision eventually is, but to me, there’s only one respectable choice.

But how does that aftermath work? What does a post “don’t put them together” world look like for the two of them? Many shipper fans will be pissed, but, honestly no more than we they were before. And I’m not smart enough to tell you why their relationship should work in this new hypothetical world; just that it shouldn’t. But these two had a great dynamic before the idea of putting them together was jammed down fans’ collective throats … go back to that.

So, apparently a “pre-complete-ring-off” is going to be a thing now. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard the phrase before (which, honestly, sounds like something completely different). Has everyone figured this out now? If so, I guess it is time to figure out a different way to blow people off let people know I’m unavailable to take their call.

Notes & Quotes

  • “Good job with the poo clues, Hodgins.” – Booth
“The secret is in the soil … it always is.” – Hodgins
  • Is there any show on television worse about product placement than Bones?
  • “Can I be honest with you?” – Hodgins
“Yeah, go for it.” – Wendell
“When you were going out with Angela, I once planned your murder in great detail.” – Hodgins
  • Anyone catch the Defying Gravity alum Eyal Podell as the radically honest murdering lawyer?
  • “You know, Dr. Brennan, you might not realize it, but you can be extremely abrasive.” – Wendell
“Oh, no, I’m well aware of that.” – Bones

Oh, I thought they said “poo” clues. Because they were talking about how the guy defecated and all…

Would it be possible to get the guest reviewer to writing the recaps again?

Scott … Any particular thing you found wanting about my post? I know I focused on the Bones/Booth relationship more than it probably deserved after this particular episode. I felt that, after covering this show for CliqueClack for some time, and then very publicly “broke up” with the show, that coming back to reviewing it without really touching on the whole thing, would be disingenuous for those that have been reading Bones related posts at CliqueClack since I had been covering it.

I can assure you that, moving forward, this won’t be the case every week. Another potential topic of this week’s could have been the affect of the rational honest on the individual and group dynamics. I actually plan a follow up post to that affect over the weekend.

Either way, I hope you continue to come back each week. Thank you!

More great quotes:
“Another clown off the streets!”
“When you wear socks to bed, I feel like I’m making love to someone in a Nursing Home.”
followed by…..
“Is that a good or a bad thing?”

I love this show!!!! —-but definitely believe B&B need to get together ASAP!!! Booth telling Brennen that it meant the world to him the she was there for him was a big step in the right direction!!!

Good review. Although I continued to watch Bones, despite the horrible Hannah debacle, I skipped eps 15 & 16 b/c they didn’t speak to me, hated when Cam tried to force Michele to go to Columbia, skipped 18 in protest, and couldn’t get past the first 5 minutes of 19.

Although I enjoyed this ep, considering they overtly forced the Bones & Booth issue throughout last season and then forced them apart at the season’s end, I just don’t care about B&B getting together anymore and wonder now (considering how they handled last season and part of this season), if the show could do it well if it happened. Heck, I’m still missing the Zack attack –

I have to agree: the product placement in Bones is lacking in the subtlety department. There are good ways to do it, and bad ways, and this was pretty bad. I’m a car nut, so the instant I saw the camera cut to the shot of Brennan’s car near the parking spot, I knew what was about to happen (and told my wife as well!)

But one show that might be as bad or worse is Hawaii Five-0 (and Amazing Race to some extent). This Monday’s episode was blatent GM advertising dollars at work.

Have you guys thought about doing a piece comparing or listing good/bad product placement on TV today?
