Being on House’s team isn’t for everyone

You can't always get what you want - like not having a Masters-centric episode - but you get what you need: another well-written, entertaining episode of 'House.'

- Season 7, Episode 19 - "Last Temptation"

“You had me at ‘I had to pee.'” – House to Masters

I started off watching this episode a little bit bored and somewhat cranky. I was not in the mood for a Masters-centric episode and after waiting until season six to get a Wilson- and a Cuddy-centric episode, I was a little pissed off that Masters, not even a full cast member, got one. When the roommate, the scummy med student guy and Masters were all interacting, I felt like I was watching a bad spin-off episode of a Grey’s Anatomy wannabe. That show would suck.

As usual, the House writers won me over. They interwove all of the situations together so masterfully that I couldn’t help but love how everything played out by the end. Plus, the chicken bet and all its trappings kept me highly entertained. “Fetch!”

I usually don’t have much to say about the case of the week, but in this episode, it was really integral to the decisions Masters made. House and Wilson gave Masters advice, but it wasn’t until the young patient (different, just like Masters) drove it home that Masters was able to decide her next move: “When you’re at the top of your game, you play by different rules,” said the patient, and House’s advice suddenly made sense to Masters.

It was really interesting that Masters didn’t just try to figure out a more innocuous way to get the parents to sign the consent form. Instead, she went all out and created a medical emergency to get her way. She turned into House, then took the Cameron way out instead of changing for the worse, like Chase did (or so Cameron thought). All in all, I’m glad Masters tried the darker side, and I’m glad she stayed true to her character and figured out it didn’t work for her.

One of my favorite moments of the episode, ironically, was when Masters’ roommate was explaining why she thought Masters should accept the internship with House. The fact that House doesn’t notice how weird she is was a pretty brilliant observation, and the dig at her wardrobe (which I’ve been slamming on all season … those tights….) made my night.

I’m not sad to see Masters go, but it was done in such a perfect way that I need to applaud the House writers once again.

Hey! I actually like Master’s wardrobe (at the least her choices in the last two episodes).

I love Amber Tamblyn, but I’m not sorry to see her character go. Watching Masters’ character interact with her roommate and her classmate during the first few minutes made me like her more because they brought out a snarkier personality. I love watching Wilson interact with House, even when they don’t interact.

They did a graceful out for Tamblyn’s character without demonizing her (as they did with C) to get rid of her. Side note: the roommate made a mention to a PhD for Masters. Does that mean she’s a child genius, she’s older than we thought, or not finishing the medical requirements of med school yields a PhD?

We already knew she was a child genius and it was mentioned again in this episode when she told the patient she was in college at age 13. She has PhD’s from other degrees before medicine, but I don’t know if we know what they are.

Very good point about the demonizing … totally agree!

HOUSE has been jumping the shark all season, and I didn’t watch this episode, knowing it would focus on Amber, who never fit on this show. Hell, I didn’t even know what her character’s name was until they began promoting this segment.

Still, now that I know she’s leaving (left), I’m curious: what was the “graceful out” the writers devised?

I chuckled to myself when I read your comment about the tights. When I watched this episode I counted three (!!!) different pairs – navy, red, and purple. With the ridiculous colors and patterns and too-short skirts it’s like Rachel Berry if she were a med student instead of a teenage glee club princess.

If I didn’t write that in a previous post, I definitely said it to Keith … Masters and Rachel read the same teen magazines of something…. ;-)

Basically, she made a decision like House would have (faked a heart episode in a patient to get her parents to sign a consent for amputation), and instead of letting it change her (like it did Chase), she got out.
