CommercialClack – Subway meets Snickers!

Since I'm on my own this week, I decided to pick two commercials. One that really slays me, and one that I'd rather never see again. Don't fear. Michael and I will return.

Don’t you just love the sharks? But before we get to them, let’s talk Subway.

I have to mute this commercial for several reasons. Sometimes an ad is only mildly amusing the first time you see it. Then, you have to see it over and over, and hatred begins to set in. Such is the case with these Subway ditties.

At first I was thinking they were kinda cute. Kinda. Then my dark side kicked in, as it always does. I wonder sometimes WHY companies take one original idea and then ride it into the ground, each time getting less creative and more annoying. You know; like SNL for the past ten seasons. It only works in commercials, if you keep expounding and adding to the story or idea. In these, everyone just regresses to idiotic babies saying stupid things to each other over a five dollar sub? Yeesh.

On the other hand, this commercial I dig with a shovel. I don’t care how many times I see it. The premise is funny and creepy at the same time. Right up my alley! Many of my best friends are funny and creepy simultaneously. (Hey now. That’s a compliment, you guys.)

I adore the idea of unsuspecting people who take part in focus groups being eaten. Small groups of people deciding things for all of us has always bothered me and seemed a bit unfair. And the fact that the sharks talk so seriously (or should I saw large tongue in larger cheekly) about the pros and cons of the taste of their human subjects is brilliant. I must now try these new lil lovely PB nuggets! I’m sold!

Or, as the sharks would say, “Steve was dee-licious!”

I absolutely agree. I have to either change the channel or hit mute when the Subway ads come on. The difference is I have felt this way since I first saw the ads.

I love the sharks and could see them using it for different scenarios.

Two ad gimmicks that have worn out their welcome: the gecko and Flo.

An ad gimmick that could grow old soon but is not quite there yet: the farmers insurance school ads

Agree with the geico and flo response. I’m over them totally.

I am addicted to the PB Snickers, and the sharks had nothing to do with it. However, I adore that commercial. As one of your friends who is both creepy and funny (okay, the lean is toward creepy but still…) I can think of all sorts of folks I’d love to see taking part in that particular focus group.

Teresa, I have 4 people in mind for the next “tastefest.”

Thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster for DVRs! I don’t have to watch the stupid ads, most of the time. Yes, I think the Subway ones are dumb and annoying. The sharks were funny, but still, once or twice is enough for me. Of course, they’re even more useful for Dancing With the Stars, and all the crap they make us sit through on the results show!

Lisana, I loves me my DVR too, but sometimes I’m stuck watching in “real time.”

I just keep thinking, “Why don’t the sharks just eat the snickers?”

I know, stick in the mud.

Katie, they like a little meat with their chocolate!
