What I learned from watching Make It Or Break It for four days straight

I'm attempting to blow through the existing half-seasons of 'Make It Or Break It' before I start reviewing the show on Mondays. Here's what I think so far!

I’ve recently decided to write about ABC Family‘sMake It Or Break It now that the new season has begun. I’m excited about this, because I had always seen the coming attractions and thought that this is a show that I would enjoy.

However, I wish I had started watching at the beginning! Now I’ve got a bunch of half-seasons to catch up on. I’m trying my best not to peek at Carla’s preview post on the most recent season. Carla did mention that I could catch MIOBI (can I shorten it to that?) on Netflix On-Demand. Sweet! I started on Tuesday and so far I’ve been able to get through one full half-season and half of the next half. So, in reality, that’s only 3/4 of Season One (right? I’m not so good at math). But I’ve still got the rest of the weekend to go! And I’ll be watching and writing up Monday’s episode regardless of what happens on my Make It Marathon.

Here are some key things that stand out to me as I’ve been watching:

  • Candace Cameron Bure might have been a better actor as DJ Tanner in Full House than on this show. But I still get this surge of glee every time I see her face. It’s just so weird! DJ! I had thought you disappeared. Even funnier is that when she was dating Lauren’s dad, Steve, she’d say his name, and it sounded exactly like how she said her boyfriend Steve’s name on Full House.
  • Emily’s mom reminds me of a cross between Elle Woods and Tyra’s mom on Friday Night Lights. I know we’re sort of supposed to detest her, but I love her. Why!?!?
  • I know these girls are “home schooled,” but, with the exception of Emily crunching for her big math test so as to not fail the class, we don’t ever see them doing work. When do they learn anything? Sasha’s got them in the gym from 7am until god-knows-when. Poor Emily has to then slum it at the Pizza Shack (just kidding; I would love to work in a pizza place, but then I’d probably gain 50 pounds). When do they do their schoolwork?
  • I know we’ll probably find this out soon and I haven’t gotten there yet, but why is Emily’s brother in a wheelchair? Was he born with a disability? Was there an accident?
  • Both the opening and closing credits are so incredibly cheesy that I can’t stop laughing every time I watch. The opening, for obvious reasons, and the closing, because the music sounds like it was plucked right out of the Halloween series. Why so spooky?
  • Kaylie looks really familiar to me, and I keep thinking she was on7th Heaven, but I know that’s probably not true.
  • I did catch the first episode of the most recent season (before going back and watching) and what I’m going to say may surprise you: I think this show actually looks worse in HD.  (The Netflix are obviously streamed in a lesser quality). I don’t know why this is. Maybe it has something to do with what I mentioned in a piece about another ABC Family teen drama, which is that they make it like a mini soap opera, with the shiny hair, extreme close-ups, matte makeup, etc. It just seems too dramatic when also paired with HD. I think I like it better without the enhancement.
  • In general, I always love watching shows about something that I simply cannot do. Whether it’s about someone who can win a spelling bee, scale a mountain, hang out with wild animals, bake a cake without a written recipe, advance in a singing competition, or do crazy gymnastics, I always get this feeling of awe while watching. And Make It Or Break It satisfies that need!
