This past Saturday, I had the opportunity to interview Candice Accola (Caroline), Executive Producer Julie Plec, and Michael Trevino (Tyler) from Vampire Diaries (pictured above) at C2E2. They were some of the most pleasant people I have ever met. While they were careful not to spoil the upcoming episodes, they did give some hints of what is to come. They also answered some questions that inquiring minds want to know.
Is Tyler coming back? While none of them specifically said “yes,” the answer is yes, Tyler will be back. Julie Plec had fun with that answer: “We are shooting a full moon in a full moon, and a full moon isn’t really worth anything in a werewolf town without a werewolf, so while I won’t make any promises, I can only hope.”
Besides, why would Michael Trevino come all the way to Chicago to talk with us, if he wasn’t coming back, right? And, he did say in his interview, “I’m confident.” when asked if he would be back. Michael talked about his first transformation episode and gave some tidbits. It was filmed over two “grueling” 14 hour days, and required him to go to some “dark places.” He said he “[listened to] heavy metal stuff and then got to some lighter songs that really meant something to my parents and reminded me of my parents.” During the panel he thanked Candice for being there during the scenes and mentioned, “When she (Candice) is telling me to calm down. It wasn’t in the script. It really did help me.” That episode was one of my favorites and I now can appreciate it more knowing how much heart and energy went into those scenes.
Have you wondered what it would be like to play a vampire on television? Well, Candice provided some scoop on what it was like right after Caroline was turned:”I went up to the carnival man and said shook his hand and said, ‘I will be biting you,’ and it was like making out with their neck, so it is even more awkward.” When asked about about the cliffhanger shocks, she said that there is one coming up on the April 7th episode. She also mentioned about a script she recently scrolled through, “”Why won’t my iPod keeping going? And then that’s the end, what do you mean that’s the end. What what what’s going to happen next?” So, even the actors on the show get excited about what is happening and want to know what is coming next.
That brings us to some semi-spoilers. Don’t read if you don’t want to know! I asked Julie Plec about the end of the last episode when Isobel shows up at Elena’s door and what that means going forward. In particular, Julie mentions that “Jenna is going to have to put a lot of pieces together. [Isobel’s return] will rock her relationship with Elena and Alaric.” And, “It will be kind of wild and traumatic.” Future episodes will also further explore the relationship between Isobel and Jon and what they have planned. And, something that I know many of you have been waiting for: Alaric punches Jon!
What is coming next? From the panel, Julie said that the show is told in chapters and we are heading into the “Klaus chapter” which includes, “Where is Klaus? Does he know about Elena? What is Isobel doing back in town? Is the sacrifice ritual gonna happen or are we gonna be able to get ourselves out of it? Will the doppelganger die? Will a werewolf die? Who will the werewolf be? Who will the vampire be?” When the show returns from hiatus, there will be another decade dance (1960s), a flashback episode and a full moon episode still to come.
Are you ready for the rest of Vampire Diaries? It returns on the CW on April 7th at 8 pm ET/7 pm CT!
While video of the interview is not available, The Gorgeous Geeks has posted the full panel conversation, which I have embedded below:
